founding of Temple University important for this time? What
were some key issues occurring in US Society during the Gilded
Age that influenced Russell Conwell’s vision?

According to The Temple Idea, Conwell set out to create “a
non-denominational college to open the way for social and
economic advancement and awaken the untapped talents and
potential of all citizens, especially those for whom higher
education was otherwise beyond reach”. Does Temple
University’s current mission statement promote similar ideals?

can they influence the different stakeholders involved in higher

Class? Should They?, what do you think colleges and
universities should do to promote class attendance?

Who benefits from higher education? Who benefited from
higher education when Temple was originally founded? Are
these benefits the same? Are they different? Does the role of
higher education change depending on the time we are alive and
the society we live in?

Why is it important for institutions of higher education to create
loyalties and shape the identities of its "people"? Describe three
ways in which institutions of higher education attempt to
accomplish these objectives.
Question 12:
In the article, College Athletics: Necessary, Not Just Nice to
Have, Robert Sternberg concluded that “college athletics
provide great value on the field and off.” Do the ‘rewards’ of
college athletics outweigh the potential negatives? Use
examples from the text and in-class discuss to support your
answer.

address, President Richard Englert provided University
stakeholders with an update of where the University is
currently. Does the current state of the University match the
mission of Temple? Provide examples to support your answer.

more difficult than ever to effectively recruit, retain, and
advance students across their highly individualized lifecycles.
Constituents are demanding greater attention to their personal
needs." (Empowered Interactions) How might institutions of
higher education respond to these challenges? Cite specific
examples from course readings and class discussion.

Reflecting back on Bain’s concept of ‘taking control of your
own education’, what are two lessons we can take away from
the article, Do Students Go to Class? Should They??
