CONCEPT AND INSPIRATIONCONCEPT: Social Innovation
CONCEPT STATEMENT: Develop new strategies, concepts, and ideas that meet the social needs of different patrons within a restaurant/ retail setting.
DESIGN STATEMENT: Since socialization and meeting new people are encouraged here, our design will be geared toward millennials who are socially aware, constantly connected and technology savvy. Therefore, technology will be integral element of the design.
Seating arrangements and space layouts will encourage mingling and dining at all hours of the day and night; for this, sustainable, flexible, customizable fixtures, furniture anequipment will be incorporated.
SOCIAL INNOVATION will be achieved through a variety of lounging and dining arrangements to satisfy the comfort of patrons desiring to ENGAGE in different dining experiences. We will install INTERACTIVE digital and tactical MEDIA stations with manipulatable
surfaces. There will be access to wifi andTECHNOLOGY to take and upload photos to cyberspace in efforts to engage contact and promote a MULTI-DIMENSIONAL experience. The gallery display will be the combination of digital and analog ART pieces, some of
the pieces will also be functional.
MISSION STATEMENT:The purpose for “The Floq” is to create an overall restaurant/retail space that functions correctly through flow, social interaction including the use of technol-
ogy and branching out with sustainable practices such as daylighting, reuse of existing materials and energy efficient appliances/fixtures.The overall design will be determined by the
core values being implemented in the creation of this restaurant/retail space
“Social innovation is a novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable, or just than present solutions and for which the value created accrues
primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals.”
COREVALUES
Social Connection in plan layout
and seating arrangements
-Sustainable Design implications
-Artwork and wine displays being
interactive if possible
-Technology-Based Design

EXISTING CONDITIONS SUMMARY
The seating is broken up into table/chair and booth seating. It had been updated fairly
recently so this would be something that could be reused. The mezzanine area upstairs is
open to the floor below which could maybe lead to lack of privacy. The floors are original
along with the wired lighting. For efficiency reasons, the lighting may need to be replaced if
wanting to pursue energy savings. One thing that may want to be considered is somehow
putting in more na ural light whether through new windows and/or light shelving as it’s fairly
dim in the back part of the restaurant. The outdoor area contains a stone/concrete table
with a fire pit in the middle. It’s a great outdoor area for customers to meet and mingle while
eating. Outside there’s also an ADA compliant ramp that needs to be updated to safer for
usage. With how big the kitchen is, the seating area needs to expand which can be done by
opening up into the expanded building to the south of the current seating area. With the ex-
pansion of the seating area, it can be a customizable area that’s easier to walk through. Over-
all, the buildingis in great shape. It just needs some updates to help with functional aspects.
BUILDING ANALYSIS
GENERAL BUILDING INFORMATION:
• Originally built as a residence “over 100 years ago”
• Renovation in 1970
-Removed and replaced floors to support greater load
	 -Raised ceiling
	 -3 central load-bearing walls
	 -Operable windows
• Total SF: 5348
• Brick and mortar walls
• Shingled mansard roof
Design elements/principles: Currently, the overall atmosphere
of “community” in the space is inconsistent. The entry, hallway,
and main dining area feeling dark and slightly congested with
saturated gray paint on the walls, terracotta wainscotting on the
lower wall, exposed brick, honey wood window trims and door
framing, tightly grouped brown leather(ish) seating around dark
wood and iron tables. The patio has a cold, industrial feel with
the exposed aged brick surrounding walls, metal railing, concrete
floor, and gray washed wood with metal standing bar tables. The
interior bar area is warm and inviting with great use of natural
and accent lighting and its reflectance on lighter wood finishes.
The raised, open ceilings and large viewing windows create a
harsh juxtaposition against the density of the functional level of
the structure. The U-shaped circulation connects the perimeter
occupancy throughout each space in the restaurant which does
create a sense of flow through the contrast.
• Codes and ADA analysis of existing
• 3 egress: 2 West, 1 East
• 1 ADA Ramp at patio
LEED CHECKLIST
With this slide, one can see our overall floor
plan which includes key areas such as the din-
ing/tech area, dessert bar, bar/wine retail area
and the patio. Except the kitchen/bathroom
areas, all the spaces had hardwood flooring.
OVERALL FLOOR PLANS
3D RENDERING
In this bird’s eye view of the model,it gives a good
insight of the different levels within the building,
including the mezzanine area with the staff lounge
and office. It also shows off the different textures
and shades of materials used, including the
existing brickwork.
TECH AND DINING HALL
This space will serve as the interactive, social, and
inspirational nerve center of the restaurant. There
will be displays of digital art, manipulable chalkboard
surfaces and transitional furniture that accommo-
date a variety of dining and entertaining needs.
BAR/WINE RETAIL AREA
In this area, there’s booth/table
seating, bar seating and an enclosed
private booth. There are multiple art
display areas including spots on the wall
behind the bar for canvas pieces. There’s
also a wine retail area with a custom wine
bottle rack.
BAR/WINE RETAIL AREA
In the render for this area, one can really
see all the textures in better detail including
the woodwork in the furniture, glasswork
in the lighting and flooring. Below with the
wood ring piece is an example of something
that could be displayed for sale on the wall
behind the bar.
DESSERT BAR AREA
In this area, there’s a set up of self-servce
ice cream and toppings. The customer
can get their treat then hang out in this
area, or even go out to the patio.
DESSERT BAR AREA
In the render for this area, it shows the
existing brick with the white paint work. On
the far wall, horizontally placed,
light-colored wood will be used to continue
the bright vibe.
PATIO AREA
This area is an accessible place all times
of the year. There are retractable awnings
and heat lamps for the warm/cold weather.
There’s also a dog area for our four legged
friends to hang out at.
PATIO AREA FF&E
In the render for this area, if shows the
detail of all the different colors & tex-
tures of this space. It also shows how the
marble fire pit table works with the con-
crete inset.

Outside there’s also an ADA compliant ramp that needs to be updated to safer for usage. With how big the kitchen is, the seating area needs to expand which can be done by opening up into the expanded building to the south of the current seating area. With the ex- pansion of the seating area, it can be a customizable area that’s easier to walk through. Over- all, the buildingis in great shape. It just needs some updates to help with functional aspects. BUILDING ANALYSIS GENERAL BUILDING INFORMATION: • Originally built as a residence “over 100 years ago” • Renovation in 1970 -Removed and replaced floors to support greater load -Raised ceiling -3 central load-bearing walls -Operable windows • Total SF: 5348 • Brick and mortar walls • Shingled mansard roof Design elements/principles: Currently, the overall atmosphere of “community” in the space is inconsistent. The entry, hallway, and main dining area feeling dark and slightly congested with saturated gray paint on the walls, terracotta wainscotting on the lower wall, exposed brick, honey wood window trims and door framing, tightly grouped brown leather(ish) seating around dark wood and iron tables. The patio has a cold, industrial feel with the exposed aged brick surrounding walls, metal railing, concrete floor, and gray washed wood with metal standing bar tables. The interior bar area is warm and inviting with great use of natural and accent lighting and its reflectance on lighter wood finishes. The raised, open ceilings and large viewing windows create a harsh juxtaposition against the density of the functional level of the structure. The U-shaped circulation connects the perimeter occupancy throughout each space in the restaurant which does create a sense of flow through the contrast. • Codes and ADA analysis of existing • 3 egress: 2 West, 1 East • 1 ADA Ramp at patio
