A mixed economy is a system that combines elements of capitalism and socialism. It arose due to failures in both capitalism and socialism. Capitalism led to issues like unemployment and inequality, while socialism lacked economic freedom and innovation. A mixed economy allows for both private enterprise and government intervention in the economy. Most modern economies are mixed, with a balance of public and private sectors.
