On Friday 5 August 2016, IFPRI-Malawi held a special seminar by Professor David Canning (Professor of Population Science and Professor of Economics & Public Health at Harvard University’s Chan School of Public Health) entitled “Demographic dividend in Africa: Does it apply to Malawi?”. Professor Canning presented on the components of population growth, the Asian economic miracle, the new view on importance of population, health and wealth of nations, the demographic dividend and Africa’s demographic transition.

Contextualising demographic transition in subSaharan AfricaSeamus Grimes
It explores different perspectives on demographic change in the context of sub-Saharan Africa, paying particular attention to the case of Kenya. It will seek to understand the relatively high levels of fertility, mortality and population growth in sub-Saharan Africa, despite the many decades of population programmes focusing on raising levels of contraceptive prevalence. Having explored the different philosophical perspectives, attention will be focused on empirical trends in relation to the dynamics of population change in the region.

Putting Children First: Identifying solutions and taking action to tackle poverty and inequality in Africa.

This three-day international conference aimed to engage policy makers, practitioners and researchers in identifying solutions for fighting child poverty and inequality in Africa, and in inspiring action towards change. The conference offered a platform for bridging divides across sectors, disciplines and policy, practice and research.

Michael Green, CEO of the Social Progress Imperative, presented about the Sustainable Development Goals, and specifically the importance of measuring development in order to drive progress. The Social Progress Imperative has produced scorecards grading countries according to their current progress on the SDGs, and in his lecture he will address the challenges and opportunities associated with using metrics in this way.

Inclusive development considers whether development progress is sufficiently widespread for the majority of a population to benefit
The World Bank has a particular focus on the economic capabilities, freedoms and resilience of the bottom 40 per cent of the World’s population and the relatively poor in individual countries.
Per capita incomes can rise but simultaneously there can also be an increase in the scale of relative poverty
The inter-generational nature of development progress also needs to be considered – i.e. creating an environment fit for future generations.
One of the defining debates in development economics is the extent to which state intervention enables inclusive growth or whether a dynamic private sector offers greater potential for lifting development progress.

Health informatics has the potential to show improve-ments in security and quality of patient's care, but its spread has some differences between developed and de-veloping countries. Related to this, the objective of this study is to know which are the challenges and hurdles to improve eHealth in developing countries. We surveyed experts to evaluate their opinion about 5 general ques-tions: economic support by Government for eHealth, Government education or training projects in the field, issues related to cultural or educational problems for the implementation of eHealth, policies in terminology or messaging standards and eHealth status policies for long periods.
It described, how do we measure development. Various development indicators. HDI, GDP, GNP etc. Where India stands in HDI. the comparison among developed nations and among SAARC nations.

The Environment and Gender Index (EGI) monitors gender equality and women's empowerment in the environmental arena. This novel index was created by the Gender Global Office of the IUCN and was launched on November 19 during the UN Climate Change Convention (COPS 19 in Warsaw, Poland).
The EGI scores and ranks 72 countries worldwide along 27 dimensions divided into 6 categories. The aim of the EGI is to measure progress, improve information and empower countries to take steps forward for gender equality and for the environment.
