Here are the key reasons large-scale agriculture was able to overcome the demise of bonanza farms in the late 1800s:
- Development of new technologies like tractors, harvesters, and other farm machinery that reduced labor needs and improved efficiency compared to the horse and manual labor-intensive bonanza farms. This made large operations more viable.
- Use of scientific innovations like crop rotation, new varieties of crops, drainage improvements, fertilizers, and breeding techniques that increased yields and productivity per acre.
- Transportation infrastructure like railroads matured, improving access to larger markets for commodity crops. This allowed economies of scale.
- Business models evolved from the risky boom-bust bonanza farms to more stable large landhold

This document discusses issues related to food justice, food sovereignty, and the challenges faced by farm workers. It argues that focusing only on food security without also addressing food production has led poor countries to import cheap subsidized food, hurting local farmers, economies, and cultures. Farm workers make significant contributions to food production but often do not earn living wages and face poor working and living conditions that impact their health, rights, and food access.

The Golden Rule of ethics must re-balance our economy. At present, those with the gold make the rules. “Any economic system should serve people, not the other way around” (Pope Francis).
According to economist Thomas Piketty’s recent “Inequality of Capital,” the top income earners now have 60% of our national income. From 1942 to 1980, however, the same high income people had only 34%. I will show what happened after 1980 to bring about our present income inequality. It has contributed to the unexpected political success of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.
Pope Francis' encyclical questions the ethics of market capitalism leading to climate change and inequality. It argues that the pursuit of individual economic gain, as promoted by concepts like the invisible hand, ignores the tragedy of the commons where individual actions negatively impact the common good. The document calls for balancing liberty and law to achieve justice, and regulating capital through policies like progressive wealth taxes. It emphasizes caring for our common home and appeals for a new dialogue on shaping our planet's future that includes all people.
This document provides an overview of globalization from the perspectives of both globalists and skeptics. It defines globalization and discusses its key components of economic, political, and cultural globalization. The document also summarizes arguments that globalization has increased world trade and GDP, as well as reduced poverty in places like China and India. However, skeptics argue that globalization has increased inequality both between and within nations. The document concludes that the debate revolves around the efficiency, fairness, and quality of life impacts of globalization.
Work and labor 4 2015 (WORK IN PROGRESS)Eric Strayer
This document discusses various topics related to work and labor, including:
- The average American will work 90,000 hours in their lifetime doing jobs that are often useless or destructive.
- Bertrand Russell's view that work falls into two categories: physical labor and management/oversight, with physical labor being unpleasant and underpaid.
- Marx's vision of a communist society where people can choose different activities each day rather than specializing in one type of work.
- Questions about how many hours a person should work depending on whether they like or hate their job.
- Examples of unsafe working conditions and wage theft in various industries such as fast food, factories, and garment workers.
The document discusses the future of Ireland's economy. It notes that while market-based models have led to economic growth, the recent recession showed weaknesses that require government intervention. For Ireland specifically, the recession resulted in a large national debt and budget deficit as tax revenues fell. The document considers what policies Ireland could adopt to strengthen its economy, create jobs, and deal with issues markets don't address like education, healthcare, renewable energy and infrastructure projects. It questions what the future may hold for Ireland and what steps the country could take.

The 2008 global economic crisis started in the US housing market but spread globally. It began as a financial crisis caused by factors like the housing bubble, poor lending practices, derivatives like CDOs and CDS, and excessive leverage or debt. This led to $30 trillion in destroyed financial assets worldwide. Governments implemented fiscal stimulus programs while central banks lowered interest rates to rescue economies. However, the full effects were prolonged and experts said recovery would not be until 2010 or beyond. New financial reforms have been introduced but regulators still struggle to prevent future crises given the pace of innovation and incentive for banks to circumvent rules in pursuit of profit.
This document provides an introduction and overview of the global economic meltdown of 2008. It discusses several key causes, including unsustainable consumption and borrowing in the US fueled by surpluses from other countries like China. It also cites the greed of investment bankers and failure of regulators. The crisis has had severe impacts around the world and shown the failures of both capitalism and communism. Moving forward will require finding a new, sustainable economic model.

It notes that countries like China have experienced much faster economic growth in recent years and may surpass the US economy in size sooner than expected. The document argues that for the US to maintain its competitive position, it will need to grow its economy significantly, reduce debt through asset sales or faster growth, and reinvent industries like manufacturing through innovation.
Colombia and latin america - The next challengesAlvaro Uribe V.
The document discusses Colombia's progress over the past decade and challenges ahead. It summarizes that Colombia has transitioned from a fragile state plagued by violence and poverty to a stable democracy and growing economy through policies promoting security, investment, and social cohesion. Key results include significantly reduced homicide and kidnapping rates as well as increased economic growth, exports, social services, and living standards. However, challenges remain regarding security, the economy, social issues, and regional risks like crime and environmental threats. The future looks promising if countries continue strengthening democratic institutions, economic growth, social development, and addressing risks.
Capitalism and globalization will not solve poverty according to the expert interviewed. Nearly a quarter of the world's population lacks meaningful employment, showing these systems only benefit a powerful few. The future costs of the current global financial crisis are estimated to be over $8 trillion, or 13% of global output, exacerbating poverty. A new universal system is needed that allows all humans to live without want or need, as neither communism nor unregulated capitalism have achieved prosperity and peace for all.

OJPs are becoming a critical resource for policy-makers and researchers who study the labour market. LMIC continues to work with Vicinity Jobs’ data on OJPs, which can be explored in our Canadian Job Trends Dashboard. Valuable insights have been gained through our analysis of OJP data, including LMIC research lead
Suzanne Spiteri’s recent report on improving the quality and accessibility of job postings to reduce employment barriers for neurodivergent people.
Decoding job postings: Improving accessibility for neurodivergent job seekers
Improving the quality and accessibility of job postings is one way to reduce employment barriers for neurodivergent people.
In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
