A current account deficit occurs when a country imports more goods, services, and capital than it exports. This makes the country a net debtor to the rest of the world. India has been running a current account deficit for several years due to higher imports than exports. While foreign investment helps fund the deficit, a large and persistent deficit could weaken the economy by draining reserves and causing currency depreciation over the long run.
