2. Sci-fi Easter Eggs
• First coined around 1979, an easter egg is a term used to
describe a message or an object in film to reveal a new detail
to the story or a way for directors to pay homage to an
inspiration they loved. Often large production
companies include easter eggs as concealed references to
their other works and add details for their attentive viewers.
• In Steven Spielberg's Sci-Fi film, Ready Player One, there
are 138 easter eggs referencing films, games, music and
franchises especially in the 70s to 80s, allowing viewers to
recognise the use of intertextual links. For example, during
the race the main character is seen driving the DeLorean time
machine from Robert Zemeckis 'Back to the Future'. Another
reference to this film is when Parzival uses the Zemeckis Cube
to reverse OASIS time by a minute, composer Alan Silvestri
adds a quick sequence of the Back to the Future theme he
created.

Easter Eggs
• Several times during the film, Spielberg hid easter eggs
through posters hanging on walls. Some examples are:
• A Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) poster on young Halliday’s
wall, the Overlook Theatre has a Return of the Jedi (1983)
poster displayed and in young James’ room is a
vintage Dungeons & Dragons poster and the
Rush 2112 poster. Inside Halliday’s bedroom is an old poster
for the original Pac-Man game. In the room there are also
many marvel magazines especially ones of the avengers
characters.
• References to pop culture are also hidden through the
characters outfits like Michael Jackson’s red “Thriller” outfit,
Prince’s “Purple Rain”, a punk Mohawk and a white Duran
Duran outfit.
