The 9/11 attacks prompted increased federal homeland security funding which totaled over $66 million for Cincinnati and Hamilton County between 2002-2011. This money was used to acquire emergency response vehicles and equipment, improve communications capabilities, and develop an alternative care center and mass casualty response units to help respond to terrorist attacks or disasters. Key acquisitions included mobile command vehicles, decontamination and bomb response vehicles, surveillance equipment, and upgrades to a 4-channel to 48-channel radio system. Shelters, medical trailers, and a rehab unit were also funded to support response operations.
