COMMUNICATING OR JUST TALKING

“I gave him a piece of my mind!” No doubt, most of us have heard this
line before, or maybe even said it ourselves. Anyone can “speak their mind,” but
when it comes to listening, well that is a different story. Often, when one wants to
offer up a “piece of their mind,” they are angry and wanting to lash out at the one
they deem responsible for their anger. There are times when one must speak up
and make his point known, but Christians must always strive to display a proper
attitude (Ephesians 4:15).
One of the many reasons we should guard against making faulty
assumptions against one another is seen in Paul’s admonition to the brethren at
Corinth.
For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which
is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of
God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit
which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us
of God (1 Corinthians 2:11-12).
We cannot know of a certainty what one another is thinking without their
willingness to reveal it to us. Paul also addressed the attitude we should have
toward one another.
The “spirit” of man in verse eleven carries the idea of the core of man or
the seat of intellect, however, the “spirit of the world” focuses more on attitude or
disposition. The Christian’s spirit (i.e., attitude) must be brought in line with the
Spirit of God. That being said, it is very interesting to know that God has sought
to communicate with man from the very beginning of time. Not only did God
speak to Adam, He listened to him as well (Genesis 3). Communication is more
than one person talking; there must be a listener as well. The question we must
ask ourselves is, “Are we listening to the word of the Lord mixed with faith”
(James 1:22)? The Hebrew writer noted the importance of listening with faith.
“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word
preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it”
(Hebrews 4:2).
Anyone with a voice can talk, but are they able to communicate? The
answer to this question hinges upon one having an attitude of a listener. The
inspired word of James gives us a practical guide for proper communication.
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak,
slow to wrath:” (James 1:19).

Vacation Bible School
Our Vacation Bible School will begin this
Sunday and extend through next Wednesday
(June 12-15) from 6:30-8:00 pm each evening on
the theme “Journey Through James.”
HOWEVER, THIS SUNDAY MORNING
DURING BIBLE CLASS we will go ahead and
study James 1. There will be a combined
auditorium class of ALL adults with Barry
teaching AND the VBS teachers of the
children’s Bible classes will teach James 1 also
that morning from cradle roll-12th grade.

Our Sick
Betty Long is in room 188 at NMMC continuing
therapy following a stroke. Ricky Johnson will
undergo knee surgery Friday. Brody Houpt, Kim
Johnson’s grandson, got a good report from his St.
Jude checkup. He’s still cancer free. Eric Baker, a
relative of Katherine Mansel & friend of Andy
Baldwyn, is undergoing chemo & radiation follow-
ing surgery to remove a brain tumor. Terry
Blackmarr, a family friend of Daniel Morton, has
metastatic cancer in her spine. Barry Kennedy’s
dad, Larry, had some more skin cancer removed last
week.

“Welcome to East Main!” I have heard
this statement so many times this week and it
has been a tremendous encouragement to me! I
want to express my gratitude towards the
congregation as this week has passed by. My
first week with the congregation has been
amazing! There is so much to be excited about
with the youth group of East Main.
Since I have been here, we have been
busy from the jump. We have held a Lock-in
for the kids as well as TGIF and a devo. When I
first got here, the youth group welcomed me
with open arms. These kids are amazing and
have shown me how amazing a youth group
can be. This group has shown me how much
they love Christ and truly desire to continue to
grow in that relationship.
This summer is going to be a great time
for the kids to be able to further their
relationship with one another as well as their
relationship with Christ. Already, I have been
able to create some relationships that will only
be able to grow as time continues. This
summer, we are going to try and learn more
about how we can walk in the ways of Christ.
