This document summarizes research on million pound donors in the UK. It finds that major donations are shaped by donors' personal experiences and goals of making a transformative impact. Donors want engagement with the causes they support and to enjoy philanthropy. However, media coverage of philanthropists is often negative, depicting them as hypocritical or motivated by ego. This challenging landscape means philanthropy is viewed as both altruistic and self-serving.
