This document discusses corporate responsibility and philanthropy. It studies how the social backgrounds of directors on boards, such as gender, education and social clubs, relate to corporate philanthropy. An empirical study found that boards with more female directors and fewer foreign directors were associated with greater membership in a corporate responsibility group and larger charitable contributions. However, it is unclear if changing board demographics would directly impact philanthropy, or if other firm characteristics drive both diversity and giving.
