Thoughts from an Industry Expert “ Utilizing rent-able applications and other low cost or free web applications allows the small nonprofit to leverage labor and financial resources. Thus they are able to serve more of their constituency, as well as better communicate with (and broaden) their donor base, and improve services. In other words, leveraging through technology provides the small nonprofit an opportunity to "level the playing field." Carolyn S. Sechler, CPA Phoenix, AZ

Editor's Notes

  1. See what the audience says Strive to see what operating as a world class charity means and place the ideas on a flip chart What comes to mind when you think of a world class charity? (relationship, efficient, resources)
  2. Majority have a small budget. How many of you fall into the 500,000-1 Million? Next, Next No matter what you think you are currently using technology to one degree or another. However, the more efficient use of technology the more you can get closer to those organizations with the 5, 10 million dollar budgets
  3. No matter what you think you are currently using technology to one degree or another. However, the more efficient use of technology the more you can get closer to those organizations with the 5, 10 million dollar budgets
  4. Large budget…you can buy whatever technology you want….less money…need to leverage
  5. Here is a simple excerpt to reiterate the idea of this whole presentation
  6. What do you use for accounting? Here are some examples where you can leverage technology for cheap.
  7. Key features and benefits. Here are the prices offered from Quickbooks.
  8. If nothing else…remember tech soup. Partners with organization to provide free or discounted products from certain vendors. How many of you have used Techsoup? Story about Chicago eTour. We talked about techsoup and one lady was very upset because she had just spent so much money upgrading their software licenses
  9. Intuit is a partner of tech soup
  10. Just saved $450.00. Here is the price offered from Techsoup.
  11. There are stipulations… Can’t have a budget over 10 million…can’t be a church, political party etc… Only US 501c3’s Etc…
  12. Go through key features and benefits Online provides remote access. The quickbooks online boasts some of the same features as online donor management
  13. Point out bullet point objectives. In addition to quickbooks there is nonprofit books specified for quickbooks. Do any of you currently use this? If so how does it help?
  14. Using resources such as these helps you have the same outreach as those large non-profits that have the millions to spend on technology. Use the free resources as well.
  15. How did you get your word processing? How much? Properly licensed?
  16. Going back to some of the offerings of Tech Soup here is an example of ways to save large amounts of money to have the same technology.
  17. Would this have been helpful for any of you?
  18. Website creation I liken to home-built databases. They need the individual who constructs them their to service and maintain the product or site.
  19. Here is an example of a vendor to register and host websites. The importance of registering your domain is important. These must be relevant to appear on the popular search engines. What are some of your URLs.
  20. Tying this all of your website activities to integrate with your database is something that is very important. It will save you time as you are building relationships and not slaving over maintaining a website. That is the point of technology. Not to tie you to your computer and office, but to automate and streamline your activities so you can spend time with your prospective and current donors.
  21. Here are some more examples of pages created by eTapestry.
  22. Having these items tie directly into your database will save you a great amount of time. Who in this rooom doesn’t think that time is money? How many have spent hours trying to pull information from an excel spreadsheet only to be completely frustrated and still without the information you need?
  23. Non customizable but cheap
  24. Set up fee…higher transaction
  25. Pay as you go
  26. Once again going back to the importance of online giving. It is extremely important.
  27. Your Internet strategy should incorporate everything from your online face (website), to your online communication (email), to your online giving (ecommerce), to the heart of your system – the database. When working with our eTapestry customers on an Internet strategy, we can happily tell them there is good news, and then there is better news. The good news is that we can take any one aspect and help them implement it. The better news is that we can make all the pieces work together in a coordinated, seamless fashion.
