This is my Senior Thesis project for Harrington's BFA in Interior Design program. The project is a 40,000+ SF Alzheimer's/Memory Care/Assisted Living facility that I have designed for a vacant old school building in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The location was chosen not only for it's architectural bones and great neighborhood location, but also for the potential to include an expansive healing garden as part of the development. The name "Bainbridge" comes from the name of the old school (Bain Elementary) and my design concept of "bridge" (as in "making connections").

Wheatland Lodge and Hospice Care Facility - Community Update SessionTraceyEvans25
On May 13, 2021 Berry Architecture + Associates provided a community update session to share the project progression. During this session, we provided a review of the community engagement sessions and the comments that we heard, talked about the site and its context in relation to the surrounding communities, shared the schematic design floor plans and elevations for the project and answered a few questions from members of the community.
This session was important for us to have with the community to showcase how many of the comments and ideas that they provided throughout the community engagement sessions have been evaluated and incorporated into the schematic design of the new lodge. The floor plans and elevations that were shown during this presentation are not final and will continue to evolve as the project progresses further through the design process.
Thank you again to everyone who participated in this update meeting! Please continue to check the project website and the project newsletters for more information as the project progresses.
This document discusses how museums can and should adopt missions focused on wellbeing and sustainability to address the root causes of issues like global warming, environmental degradation, and inequality. It recommends that museums (1) educate about these issues while giving space for difficult emotions, (2) engage cultural values to help bridge the value-action gap, and (3) change how they engage with communities towards mutual relationships and wellbeing. Adopting missions centered on wellbeing rather than just wealth may risk challenging the status quo but can be achieved by learning from failures, building support networks, and defining communities openly while establishing the museum as a local hub.
This document outlines solutions for historic house museums struggling with long-term sustainability. It discusses trends showing many house museums lack sufficient funding and staffing. Eight solutions currently used are described, including reprogramming the site's use, co-stewardship agreements, asset transfers, and selling or leasing the property with protective easements. Case studies demonstrate how various historic houses have successfully implemented these solutions to ensure their long-term preservation.

This document provides research and context for designing an orphanage and old age home. It discusses trends showing India's growing elderly population and numbers of orphans. The project aims to establish mutual relationships where the elderly act as parents to orphans and the orphans provide companionship. The design must cater to both groups' needs while allowing independent functioning. A site in Ghaziabad near residential areas and transportation is selected. Area standards and case studies of existing facilities are presented to inform the design concept options. The options cluster program areas to facilitate relationships between elderly and orphans while providing required spaces.
The Leith Hub community development project aims to address social issues like isolation and crime by creating an integrated community hub. The hub will provide facilities for offices, workshops, arts spaces, therapy, meetings, a shop, and restaurant. It seeks to improve community interaction and inclusion, cross-fertilization of ideas, stronger social ties, and better access to support services. Having a central community space will help disadvantaged individuals, provide local jobs, celebrate heritage, and promote environmental sustainability. The vision is for a self-sustaining hub that strengthens the community.
The document outlines several benefits of community gardening including: increasing a sense of community through organization and bringing people together; preventing crime by providing opportunities for neighbors to meet and watch the neighborhood; offering cultural opportunities for diverse groups to work together and exchange traditions; providing educational opportunities for youth to learn about food, business, and the environment; and improving health by increasing access to healthy foods and green space. Community gardening also creates green space, beautifies neighborhoods, and can increase property values.
The document summarizes a proposed hospice care center called Sneh - Smruti for adolescent cancer patients and their families in India. The center would provide both in-patient and out-patient care, including 24 patient units, accommodations for mothers, and round-the-clock support. It addresses the specific needs of this patient group through a focus on healing environments, addressing the 5 stages of grief, and responding to the local climate and culture of Gujarat. The proposed design incorporates public, semi-public, semi-private and private spaces organized around courtyards to promote social interaction and support for patients and their families.
The document summarizes responses from a town hall where community members were asked three questions about creating healthy neighborhoods and 21st century learning spaces. For the first question on making neighborhoods thriving, responses focused on gathering places, schools, community centers, accessibility, and green spaces. For the second question on how learning spaces can nourish communities, responses emphasized lifelong learning, multi-generational spaces, accessibility, collaboration, and practical skills. For the third question on what 21st century learning looks like, several models were proposed that featured libraries, healthcare, green spaces, multi-use facilities, and spaces for people of all ages.
The document provides a master plan for improvements to the Axtell Campus. It discusses conducting an analysis of the existing conditions and opportunities for enhancement. The plan envisions creating a more residential, family-oriented environment through additions like staff housing, a market square, and improved pedestrian connections. Specific projects are outlined like a new bridge entrance, welcoming quad, barns redevelopment, and community gardens. The long-term vision discusses expanding programs for therapies like equine, drama, cooking, art, and dance. The overall goal is to encourage community, pursue goals, and connect Axtell through a more vibrant campus environment.
Lagniappe Village is a proposed senior living community in Houma, Louisiana that will provide 253 residential units in three main buildings oriented around two courtyards and outdoor recreational areas. The development aims to foster community and meet the needs of an aging population through accessible and ergonomic unit designs, as well as common areas and amenities like a community garden, exercise trail, and meditation pavilion. Stormwater will be managed onsite through bio-swales and a retention pond. The development will be financed through HUD programs, tax credits, and bonds to make it affordable for seniors while providing a neighborhood atmosphere.
This senior-level course focuses on critical thinking through research, writing, discussion and problem-solving. Students identify a design problem and develop a visual solution incorporating responsible design methods. They examine hotel design elements and develop presentations reflecting industry standards. The course also presents an in-depth study of architecture and design from several non-western cultures through team presentations and fusion furniture designs.
The document discusses improving hospice interior design. It provides background on the history and purpose of hospice care. The research issue is that existing hospice facility buildings adapted from other structures often cannot meet complex patient needs. The objectives are to study and analyze hospice interior spaces, identify challenges, and formulate design guidelines. Interviews with patients, doctors and relatives found issues like rooms lacking storage, long corridors, and an institutional atmosphere. Recommendations include providing tranquil spaces for meditation, resting areas, and integrating indoor and outdoor spaces to feel more comfortable.
This document provides a vision for transforming an area in Encinitas, California into an integrated cultural, educational, and recreational center focused on sustainability and nature. The vision includes establishing various institutions and attractions across hundreds of acres, including expanding the San Diego Botanic Garden, developing early childhood education facilities, adding agritourism and horticultural research, and connecting it all with trails and open spaces. If realized, it could enhance the community for generations to come by providing new opportunities for learning, recreation, and bringing together people of all ages.
This document discusses the benefits of aging in community rather than in isolation. It promotes connecting generations so that older adults and youth can support each other. Examples are provided of intergenerational programs where older adults serve youth through activities like gardening and cooking classes. Other examples show youth serving older adults through arts programs and companionship. Ideal aging communities would be inclusive, sustainable, and promote health, engagement, and interdependence across ages.

34. challenge
add atrium and wandering garden, maximize sunlight
studies of conservatory and private balconies (porches)
solution: 2-story conservatory to replace gymnasium on south facade. South portion of site to be
excavated down to first floor level (4’-6” below grade). New entry doors provide walk-out access to
a grand “sunken” garden. Exterior stairs and wheelchair ramp provide access to street level.
result: conservatory serves to create atrium-like interior without adding skylights, maximizes sunlight,
creates transition space from outdoor garden to indoor garden. Victorian styling will be far more in
keeping with historical architecture of original structure.
