Searching Catalyst for e-books

Downloading an EBL e-book ,[object Object]
Choose loan length, either 1 or 7 daysand then select “Download Book”
E-books already purchased by the library are available for loans of 4 or 7 days.
Adobe Digital Editions is required to download all EBL e-books. If you do not have ADE installed on your computer it is available for free on the EBL download page.,[object Object]
Uploading an e-book to an e-reader Connect e-reader to computer using its USB cable. The device will automatically appear in your ADE account To upload an e-book to your e-reader, simply “grab and drag” the e-book to your e-reader Example: Barnes & Noble Nook Directions for upload

Adobe Digital Editions To begin you will need to download and register Adobe Digital Editions To download the free software go     to: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ Launch the ADE installer and select the appropriate      format, either Windows© for PCs or Mac OS.

After you have successfully downloaded and installed the ADE software it is important that you authorize your computer. Registering Your Computer Authorize Your Computer
Get an Adobe ID Online
Registering for an ADE ID Complete the step for creating an Adobe Account and then return to your ADE installation page and enter your new Adobe ID and click “activate”             Step 1 Step 2
Congratulations ! You have now successfully downloaded Adobe Digital Editions and Authorized your computer. You may now begin downloading DRM protected material from the Library.

Editor's Notes

  1. This tutorial will show you how to search the library’s catalog for ebooks, read and download e-books, and transfer e-books to e-readers.
  2. - Catalyst will eventually become the libraries new online catalog. It is currently available in BETA format, but its e-book search is very simple to use.-
  3. Under "Format" select "Book”
  4. Now select “Online” under “Format” on the left side tool barOnce both “book” and “online” are selected under Format you may begin your e-book search.
  5. Simplytype in your search query, either by title, author, or subject or do a key word search using the “any field” option.It is important to note that search results will be sorted by relevancy.However, you can easily change this by using the drop down box next to the “Sort By” box and selecting either: Relevance, Year, Author, or title.- You may also narrow your search results by using the limiters available on the left side of the pageYou may narrow your search by author, language, topic, series, or discipline.To limit by date, select publication year and use the date slide bar to limit to a specific time frame.
  6. Once you find an e-book that you are interested in, simply click on its title to be redirected to its full holding page.
  7. Here you will be able to export the e-book’s citation to RefWorks

  9. Or view a citation of the item.However, Be sure to consult the appropriate style guide to ensure the citation is accurate.
  10. To access the full text of the e-book online, click on its electronic version link available on the right side of the page in the “Find It” box. You may be prompted to enter your JHED ID an password, before being automatically redirected to the books electronic versionThis particular book is apart of EBL--the electronic book library database
  11. There are over 850,000 ebooks in the JHU library and they all come from different databases and vendors. Each e-book site looks different and has different rules for usage governing viewing, downloading and printing ebooks.EBL is one of the many e-book databases available through the library.
  12. In order to read an EBL e-book you must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Adobe Reader is a free software available from Adobe and can be downloaded from the EBL homepage.To read the book online, simply click the blue “Read online” button on the bottom left side of the page.
  13. - After selecting “read online” the book will open automatically on your computer. You can search within the book, skip to specific pages and chapters, record notes, or use the read aloud feature to listen to an audio version of the book. usage rules vary by book. But in most cases you may print and copy a percentage of the total book.
  14. If you would like to download the e-book, select the “download” tab on the tool menu and choose your loan length, either 1 or 7 days.It is important to note that EBL requires Adobe Digital Editions to be installed on your computer before you may download an EBL e-book. If you do not have ADE installed on your computer you may download the free software on the EBL download page. For more information about Adobe Digital Edition, what it is, why you need it, and how to download it. Please watch the Adobe digital Editions video located under the “finding and getting e-books” tab of this guide, on the “downloading ebooks page”.
  15. The Downloaded e-book will automatically open in Adobe digital editions.The length of the e-book loan will appear in the band around the upper right side of the e-bookAfter the loan has expired, you will no longer be able to access the e-book.
  16. In ADE you may read the book, take notes, make bookmarks, or transfer the e-book to a portable device, like an e-reader or smart phone.
  17. To transfer a downloaded e-book from ADE to a portable device, like a smart phone or e-reader. You must first connect your portable device to your computer using its USB cables. ADE will automatically detect your device and will prompt you to register the device with your ADE account. It is important that your e-reader device is registered with the same email account that you used to register your ADE account.After registering your device, the smart phone or e-reader will automatically appear in your ADE library.To transfer an e-book to your portable device, simply use your mouse to “grab and drag” the e-book to your e-reader. You may confirm the e-book upload by clicking on your device in ADE to open its library and view the items stored on it

  19. - What is ADE? Adobe digital editions is a free software, available for both Macs and PCs. It allows you to organize and manage DRM and non-drm e-books. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management and protects copyrighted material from being disseminated illegally. Some JHU e-books are non-drm and can be freely downloaded, shared and printed, However DRM protected JHU e-books will require the use of Adobe digital editions. For example, all e-books available through EBL are DRM protected and will require Adobe Digital Editions to read and download.
  20. - Choose your operating system, either PC or mac and then Follow the directions and prompts from the ADE “Set-up Assistant”
  21. - If you already have an Adobe ID, enter it and click “Activate”- Otherwise, select “get an Adobe ID online” and you’ll be re-directed to the ADE registration page.
  22. Registering for and Adobe Account Step 1: Select “Create an Adobe Account” in the yellow bar and follow the steps to create an Adobe Account.-Once completed, return to your Adobe Digital Editions installation page and enter your new Adobe ID and hit “activate”
