During the two decades following WWII, significant political, social and economic developments took place within the United States. The global triumph against virulent racism associated with the fascist Axis Alliance along with the liberation of colonial regimes, most particularly within Africa, highlighted the blatant prejudice inherent in racial segregation. Due to military service abroad, many members of the armed forces were cognizant of the disparity between American ideals and reality as the nation became absorbed with the pent up desire to improve individual's quality of life. While prosperity increased for most Americans, subsequent evidence revealed many residents did not share in the affluent society. Racial and ethnic prejudice remained acutely visible. As a tragic consequence of the virulent McCarthyism spectacle, citizens who overtly criticized fundamental inequality were viewed with profound suspicion. The Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v Board of Education forced apathetic Americans to confront the horrifying edifice of institutional discrimination. With extensive media attention, a persistent civil disobedience campaign was coordinated by Dr. Martin Luther King’s Southern Leadership Conference. As the scope of public protest expanded, it led to the enactment of legislation during the early 1960s that was designed to fundamentally eradicate the political vestiges of racial discrimination and broaden opportunities for women, veterans and people with disabilities. Men and women married younger and started families at a record pace, producing the postwar “baby boom.” The upsurge in family life affirmed traditional values while creating demand for household goods. Millions of American families moved to the burgeoning suburbs, filling the new mass-produced homes with television sets, appliances, and various other consumer goods.
The Cold War made a substantial imprint on postwar society and culture. Anti-communist crusades, which cast dissent as disloyalty, inspired conformity and had a chilling effect on political debate. At the same time, the image of the American family in a gadget-laden suburban ranch house became an important symbol in the ideological battles of the Cold War, signaling the superiority of “free enterprise” over the Soviet system.
In this context, the political, ideological, and class divisions of the past seemed to lose their significance. To many observers, a “consensus” had emerged, in which Americans were in agreement about the virtues of liberal democracy and capitalism. Indeed, the rising affluence of American society seemed to suggest that any lingering national problems could be solved by adjusting the status quo, not overturning it.
Yet there were also strong currents of anxiety and discontent in postwar society. The specter of nuclear annihilation hung like a dark cloud over otherwise optimistic expectations for a prosperous and secure future. And not everyone enjoyed the good life depicted in glossy magazine advertisements and on television sit-coms. Poverty and racial discrimination cut millions of people out of the American dream. At the same time, critics worried about the conformity and complacency engendered by postwar society, while men and women experienced frustration with traditional gender roles. In the 1950s, discontent found expression in works of social criticism, a vibrant youth culture, and in the anti-materialist writing and style of the Beats and their followers.

about race in America.2 First, that racial
inequality and division were not only
Southern problems attached to Jim Crow
segregation. Second, that the nature of
those inequalities and divisions was a
matter not merely of formal civil status
and law, but also of deeply etched eco-
nomic arrangements, social and politi-
cal conditions, and cultural outlooks
and practices. Viewed in full, the racial
divide was a challenge of truly national
reach, multilayered in its complexity
and depth. Therefore, the achievement
of basic citizenship rights in the South
was a pivotal but far from exhaustive
stage of the struggle.

around the achievement of voting rights.
March 7, 1965, now known as Bloody Sun-
day, saw police and state troopers attack
several hundred peaceful civil rights pro-
testors at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in

of basic citizenship rights in the South
was a pivotal but far from exhaustive

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, cognitive psychology researchers conducted studies that offered new information about how memory is stored and processed. Findings suggested that memory is first encoded based on sensory data from the environment (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell), moved to short-term memory, where it can be easily retrieved, and, when rehearsed (i.e., repeated thinking about the memory), moved to long-term memory, where it is stored and can be retrieved at a later date (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968; Craik & Lockhart, 1972).
The basic structural information about memory that arose from these early studies, along with the emergence of brain imaging technology, has led to major advancements in our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience. For example, there is a body of literature on the association between PTSD and memory dysfunction. Traumatic memories are thought to be encoded differently than other memories, which helps explain symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety. In addition, experiencing a traumatic event and then consistently reliving it through flashbacks and nightmares can damage the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory encoding, leading to deficits in short-term memory (Hays, VanElzakker, & Shin, 2012; MacIntosh & Whiffen, 2005). Fortunately, exciting new research on neuroplasticity suggests that the brain is malleable and that it is possible to reverse the damage to certain parts of the brain (Kays, Hurley, & Taber, 2012).

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The global triumph against virulent racism associated with the fascist Axis Alliance along with the liberation of colonial regimes, most particularly within Africa, highlighted the blatant prejudice inherent in racial segregation. Due to military service abroad, many members of the armed forces were cognizant of the disparity between American ideals and reality as the nation became absorbed with the pent up desire to improve individual's quality of life. While prosperity increased for most Americans, subsequent evidence revealed many residents did not share in the affluent society. Racial and ethnic prejudice remained acutely visible. As a tragic consequence of the virulent McCarthyism spectacle, citizens who overtly criticized fundamental inequality were viewed with profound suspicion. The Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v Board of Education forced apathetic Americans to confront the horrifying edifice of institutional discrimination. With extensive media attention, a persistent civil disobedience campaign was coordinated by Dr. Martin Luther King’s Southern Leadership Conference. As the scope of public protest expanded, it led to the enactment of legislation during the early 1960s that was designed to fundamentally eradicate the political vestiges of racial discrimination and broaden opportunities for women, veterans and people with disabilities. Explain the achievements and controversies of domestic conditions within the United States during this time frame and analyze the circumstances that allowed complacency to block meaningful progress to resolve these conditions for so long.
