Welcome to this new and exiciting presentation about the world
heritage site of Durham Cathedral and castle. The cathedral has been a
house of pray for 900 years. This majestic cathedral overlooking a bend
in the River Wear tells the story of Chrisitian England and the site of
where the bones of St Cuthbert and Bede lay today.
The Cathedral and Castle has been a world heritage site since 2007, the
cathedral is very british and a lot of people come to see St Cuthbert’s
shrine and the majestic high rooms in the cathedral. We hope you enjoy

3. Durham Castle
Durham Castle was built in 1069 after William the Congquero decided to
build a remote motte and bailey castle around the streets of Durham. He
decided that he wanted a castle near to his amazing Norman Cathedral.
The Castle still stands today but some of the rooms in the castle are
housed for university and the living skills while students are living her in
Durham, there is also guide tours around the bits of castle that are not
part of the university of Durham.

4. How did Durham become a world
heritage site?
Durham became a world heritage site in 2007 after the majestic cathedral
and castle overlooking the River Wear were amazing and high to people
amazing visiting.
The town has been a hit for people who live far away and want to come
and see the town. The Cathedral dominates the skyline of Durham with
the castle, river and streets in picture. The Cathedral is one of the most
keep in England after London’s Westminster and St Paul’s Cathedral.

to university. The town has had a lot of
people want to go to university here.

6. VENERABLE BEDE
Who Was Bede?
St Bede is one of the most important saints who lived during
through the Anglo Saxon Times. He lived and died between the
two amazing monstaries of Wearmouth and Jarrow.
Where did Bede come from?
St Bede was a very clever monk who wrote poetry and words of
Cuthbert and Aidan. He lived between the years of 673 and 735.

7. Why did Bede write poetry and words?
St Bede wrote different letters to the monks of Lindisfarne
and Cuthbert to tell them about his experinces. He also
wrote lots of diary enteries after Cuthbert died in 698 Ad.
Where is Bede buried in the cathedral?
Bede is buried under a black and gold shrine the Gailee
Chapel. This burial was the most important burial after
Cuthbert because a lot of people still today see his grave.

8. CUTHBERT
Who was Cuthbert?
St Cuthbert is a well know saint who helped changed Northern
Christian to life after Aidan. He looked after the lands of Melrose
and Lindisfarne.
What years did Cuthbert life for?
Cuthbert lived his amazing and eternal life from 634 to 698Ad.
He helped change Lindisfarne and the abbey that we know today
before Henry VIII and the Vikings came to destroy his land of
peace and quiet.

9. Why did Cuthbert like Lindisfarne & Melrose?
Cuthbert decided to live at both places. He enjoyed the peace and
quiet of the lands in Scotland and Northumberland. He also enjoyed
going to the sea so that he could find fish or wildlife to live by.
Cuthbert death and Burial
Cuthbert died on 20th March 698 Ad on the Farne Islands. He enjoyed
living here after retiring from Lindisfarne. He was buried firstly at his
abbey, but the Vikings invaded him. He was finally buried at
Durham in 995 Ad after the monks found Durham as their place to
rest him in their new white church.

10. The Tower
On a bright sunny day, you can see the high levels of the river
with the majestic town overlooking the tower.
There is 325 steps and some of the tower can be quite narrow in
spaces. You have to be very careful while going up the steps.
When you get up their, you see amazing views and when you
come back down, you get a warm coffee or lunch in the café.
