At DuPont, food security is at the heart of our priorities. Across the globe, DuPont
businesses – DuPont Pioneer, Crop Protection, Nutrition & Health, Packaging &
Industrial Polymers, and Industrial Biosciences– are addressing food security with
science-based innovations. We are building collaborations with businesses,
non-profit organizations and governments, and working with local farmers and
food producers.
In 2010, we convened an external expert panel, The DuPont Advisory Committee
on Agricultural Innovation and Productivity for the 21st Century. Chaired by
former U.S. Senator Thomas A. Daschle, the panel examines the best public policy
mechanisms and business practices that could have the most far-ranging impact
on achieving global food security. In response to the Committee’s first report in
2011, DuPont committed to a series of food security goals. The Committee’s work
continues and can be found online at foodsecurity.dupont.com
DuPont 2020 Food Security Goals
In the spirit of “what gets measured gets done,” DuPont announced in 2012,
corporate goals to enhance global food security that would be realized by the end
of 2020. DuPont encourages all employees to do their part in making food more
nutritious, safer and available to people everywhere.
Innovating to Feed the World. DuPont committed $10 billion to research and
development, and the introduction of 4,000 new products by the end of 2020.
The work centers on developing innovations that will produce more food, enhance
nutritional value, improve agriculture sustainability, boost food safety, extend food
freshness and reduce waste.
Engaging and Educating Youth. By the end of 2020, DuPont will facilitate 2 million
engagements with young people around the world to transfer the knowledge
of sustainable food and agriculture and the impact it will have on a growing
population.
Improving Rural Communities. DuPont will work to improve the livelihoods of at
least 3 million farmers and their rural communities through targeted collaborations
and investments that strengthen agricultural systems and make food more
available, nutritious and culturally appropriate. This is in addition to the work
already being done by DuPont to enhance the lives of hundreds of millions of
farmers through our normal business practices.

DuPont Food Security Goals in Action
Bringing New Product Solutions
Cutting-edge solutions such as Pioneer®
brand corn hybrids with the Optimum®
AQUAmax®
provide improved drought tolerance and are an example of how DuPont
is protecting farmers’ crops and meeting its food security goal of 4,000 new
products by 2020. Optimum®
AQUAmax®
helps farmers minimize risk and maximize
productivity by enabling improved yield stability for corn under water-stressed
growing conditions.
Growing the Next Generation of Food and Agriculture Leaders
DuPont will continue its long-standing partnership with 4-H as a means of ensuring
we meet our target of 2 million youth engagements by 2020. One initiative involves
working with 4-H to engage youth in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa,
and Ethiopia to help prepare future food and agriculture leaders for tomorrow’s
challenges. Programs include a Leadership Institute for adult 4-H leaders and
Enterprise Gardens for building hands-on farming and business training for youth.
More than 14,000 youth were involved in these 4-H programs in 2012.
Working with Smallholder Dairy Farmers
Enriching rural communities starts with improving the livelihoods of farm families.
To support our goal of improving the livelihoods of at least 3 million smallholder
farmers and their communities by 2020, DuPont is working closely with small
farmers in Latin America to reduce milk waste at dairy farms and to help them
produce quality cheese more consistently and hygienically. DuPont™
Danisco®
Marschall®
brand rennet is a complex enzyme in a simple tablet form that modifies
milk protein to form a curd and make cheese. Local DuPont employees work
collaboratively with Latin American farmers to implement this technology on their
smallholder operations to bring stability and profitability to rural regions.
DuPont made these commitments out of a core belief that there is a science to
feeding the world and ensuring food security. However, this task is so large and
multifaceted that no one country, let alone one company, has all the answers. It will
take all of us working together to feed the world.

The world continues to face the unprecedented challenge of feeding a global population that will exceed 9 billion by
2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) projects that farmers will need to nearly
double the world’s total food production to meet the growing demand. Most of these gains will need to be made
by the 500 million smallholder farmers who produce much of the agricultural output in developing countries, and
they will need to do so with less arable land and water. We must also address the crisis of food waste. Each year,
one third of the food produced globally is wasted. Near term gains in food security may start with securing the food
already produced.
Overcoming the threats to our global food supply requires taking scientific innovation well beyond the lab. It
means taking innovation into fields and local communities, especially in developing economies such as Sub-
Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia where the majority of the chronically malnourished population live.
DuPont businesses – DuPont Pioneer, Crop Protection, Nutrition and Health, Packaging & Industrial Polymers,
and Industrial Biosciences – are working together and are committed to making food more nutritious, safer and
available to people everywhere.
Our approach to delivering science-based innovation is built upon four pillars:
• SCIENCE IS UNIVERSAL, BUT FOOD SECURITY SOLUTIONS MUST BE LOCAL: Innovative solutions should
be driven by the needs of those whose lives we are trying to improve. Farmers need access to world-class
science, technology and tools that will improve productivity, profitability and farm management. Solutions
must start with local needs, whether it’s an Indonesian farmer who needs a corn hybrid adapted to his local
growing conditions or a Kenyan girl who is going blind because she does not have enough Vitamin A in her diet.
• COLLABORATION UNLOCKS THE ANSWERS SCIENCE PROVIDES: Solutions must be collaborative—reached in
concert with communities, governments, NGOs and farmers who know the “facts on the ground” and with
global businesses who have the specialized expertise or resources to help solve particular problems. In short,
collaboration must have no limits, for answers are everywhere.
• SCIENCE MUST BECOME LOCAL WISDOM: Know-how must be brought to the people and places that need it
most, working side-by-side with all involved to share knowledge with farmers and communities who can use
it to secure their futures. Sharing technology with farmers means more than just agronomic information or
products; it means providing access to market information, communications technology, financing and crop
storage.
• SOLUTIONS MUST BE SUSTAINABLE IN THE BROADEST SENSE OF THE WORD. Solutions for food security
should consider environmental, economic, political and cultural factors. This means making the required
investments in infrastructure, technology, and community development. And, it means empowering women,
who make up the majority of smallholder farmers, and educating and inspiring young people to be future
farmers and nutritionists.

WORLDANDENSURINGFOODSECURITY
Welcome to the Global Collaboratory.™
Together we can feed the world.
DuPont and its collaborators are working to create solutions to the challenges of food security. Increasing food
quantity, improving food quality, and reducing food waste will make a significant impact on people’s lives and
livelihoods. Our consistent presence along the food value chain allows us to holistically address the complex set of
issues and vulnerabilities – country by country – that together define food security.
Looking Ahead
The world has made continuous progress towards eradicating extreme hunger and poverty. Developing countries
have nearly halved the proportion of those suffering from hunger. Scientific innovations have succeeded in
significantly enhancing the quality and quantity of food production. Innovations include maximizing the productivity
potential of seeds – even in harsh conditions; keeping crops pest and disease free; enhancing the nutritional value
of staple foods; and reducing waste by keeping food fresher longer. And, business, governments and NGOs have
collaborated to help farmers, particularly smallholder farmers, gain access to the right tools – from the most basic
local practices to the most advanced technologies to connect farmers to markets.
Nonetheless, we cannot ignore the significant challenges that remain. Dupont is committed to these actions to
accelerate progress locally on food and nutrition security:
•	 Unleash innovation to produce more nutritious food;
•	 Develop ways to make food more accessible and affordable;
• Improve trade policy to better enable the free flow of food from where it can best be produced to where it is
most needed;
• Address food waste crisis by improving agriculture and food systems, extending freshness and diet
diversification;
•	 Develop strategies for tackling undernourishment as well as over consumption of empty calories;
• Improve linkages along food and agriculture value chain and invite other sectors to the table; and
• Help make food and agriculture economically viable professions and encourage youth to choose these
livelihoods.
Solutions to the challenges of achieving worldwide food security are built on today’s successes. However, no one
company, country or non-profit organization can meet these challenges alone. Each of us can commit to doing
our part and holding ourselves accountable to make a meaningful contribution to this global challenge that has
ramifications for all citizens, governments and businesses. Because, quite simply, feeding the world is everyone’s
business.

Although science provides answers that can be applied universally, DuPont’s experience shows that solutions
must be found at the local level to help people improve their lives and livelihoods.
DuPont Pioneer EncircaSM Services
As farming operations become more complex and data intensive, growers increasingly need tools that enable them
to take advantage of all the information available. With that challenge in mind, DuPont Pioneer developed EncircaSM
,
a suite of farm management services designed to provide growers with timely and actionable insights to maximize
productivity and profitability. The services include applications for mobile devices that allow growers to scan a seed
tag and indicate their planter type to maximize planter performance and seed drop accuracy, or to monitor their
fields in real-time for precipitation and growth stage development.
Customized Food Safety Solutions
The DuPont™ BAX® System, created by DuPont Nutrition & Health, is used around the world to identify bacterial
contamination in food at the genetic level. Because standards and regulations for pathogen detection can vary
from country to country, DuPont may develop customized solutions for local needs. For example, U.S. regulations
mandate that food products must be free of listeria bacteria, so the BAX® System tests for its presence or absence.
In the European Union, however, a threshold for listeria bacteria has been established in certain foods that do not
offer a medium for growth, so DuPont developed an alternative protocol to detect listeria bacteria above or below
the allowable thresholds.
Addressing Malnutrition in Mexico
The Tarahumera people, a Native American tribe who live in a remote area of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, have
suffered declining water supplies for years, resulting in crop loss, malnutrition and hunger. When a local company
wanted to provide the Tarahumera people with supplies of milk to help meet their nutritional needs, it sought a
solution that would allow the milk to be preserved for up to 12 months without refrigeration in a package that would
withstand the long overland journey. DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers partnered with a local manufacturer
to provide DuPont Surlyn®
resin as a sealant for a dual-chamber package design that separated purified water and
powdered milk, allowing them to be easily combined when ready to be consumed. This collaborative effort has
helped provide valuable nutritional assistance to a population enduring difficult local conditions.
Best Off-Patent Crop Protection Innovation
The Agrow Awards were developed to recognize excellence in the crop protection and production industry. DuPont
received this award for the development of an herbicide dispensing system that offers growers customized
weed control. The system replaces standard rigid plastic jugs. Used in the United States and Canada, DuPont™
PrecisionPac™
dispenses the exact amount of product or product mixture customized for the size of the farmer’s
field or sprayer load. This enables farmers to respond to rapidly changing weed control needs.

The convictions that know-how must be brought to the people and places that need it the most is central to
the DuPont approach. Working side-by-side with the population in education and outreach efforts, we transfer
knowledge to the communities who will use it to secure their future.
Philippines Vermiculture Project
Decades of corn production in the village of Glamang in the Philippines left farmers there facing steadily declining
soil fertility conditions. To promote a sustainable solution to this problem, DuPont Pioneer collaborated with local
government agencies to introduce a vermiculture program to farmers. Vermiculture is a method by which organic
farm waste is converted to nutrient-rich fertilizer in a small shed and then applied to crop fields. By ensuring
proper methods were taught to local farmers, Pioneer encouraged growers in the village to build more than 100
vermiculture sheds producing enough organic fertilizer to service 135 hectares of fields.
Vietnam Rice Model Farm Program
To achieve its future food security and self-sufficiency goals, the government of Vietnam has made increasing
domestic agriculture production a priority. Recognizing this increased production must be done in a more
sustainable way while delivering higher crop yields, DuPont Pioneer collaborated with the Thanh Hoa province
government to develop the Rice Model Farm Program to share valuable know-how with local farmers. At two model
farms in the province, Pioneer provides local growers a series of demonstrations throughout the growing cycle to
educate them on effective hybrid rice farming techniques. Farmers are taught proper seed selection, soil health
management, pest control, water conservation, and harvesting and post-harvesting practices. By arming farmers
with this knowledge, Pioneer is helping Vietnam achieve a more secure food future.
Benefits of “Cover Crops” in the U.S.
In the U.S., DuPont is using its expertise to advise farmers of the benefits of planting “cover crops” to promote
sustainable agriculture. Cover crops are those including oats or rye that are seeded into existing crops such as
corn or soybean to control weeds, prevent erosion, and improve soil health. These cover crops are also beneficial
alternatives in regions such as the Midwest that are susceptible to weather-related “prevented planting” when
heavy rains or drought prevent planting of soybean or corn during the growing season. Planting cover crops is a
relatively new practice, but DuPont Pioneer is helping farmers realize it can pay significant dividends in terms of
land stewardship and crop yields.
Soy Protein Supplement for Malawi
Together with local growers, producers and distributors, DuPont Nutrition & Heath has introduced a nutrient-dense
soy protein supplement to Malawi, Africa, as part of a solution to help curb malnutrition. DuPont food scientists
provide Rab Processors with soy protein and processing support for a good-tasting nutritional food supplement.
Called Sibusiso® , the Zulu word for “blessing,” the product is made from locally grown groundnuts and DuPont
soy protein. The supplement does not require cooking or refrigeration and supports Malawi’s farmers and country
economy in addition to a good food source for Malawi’s citizens.

Around the globe, DuPont works with farmers, local businesses, governments, NGOs and others who know the
facts on the ground in order to find answers that will increase productions, reduce waste and deliver nutrition to
those most in need.
Africa Biofortified Sorghum Initiative
Sorghum is an affordable staple food for more than 300 million people in Africa, yet it lacks most essential
nutrients. To solve this nutritional challenge, DuPont Pioneer joined the Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) Initiative,
a public-private partnership to develop sorghum seeds with increased pro-vitamin A, zinc and iron content, and
then build the production and distribution capability to get biofortified sorghum to farmers in Africa. As a result,
not only has the level of pro-vitamin A been improved to levels that result in delivery of 100 percent of the daily
Vitamin A requirement in children, but the stability of pro-vitamin A during grain storage also has been dramatically
improved.
China’s School Milk Program
DuPont is working with partners and government representatives to ensure China’s young students not only have
access to high-quality, nutritious milk, but also that the milk is properly formulated for their tastes. Working to
help improve nutrition for children in China, DuPont and New Hope Dairy Co. developed specially formulated milk
for China’s National School Milk Program. DuPont partnered with New Hope Dairy Co. to develop the best possible
recipes for varieties of milk that would appeal to different children’s tastes in different regions across China. This
National School Milk Program now supplies about 12.5 million students with safe, healthy milk every day.
Sustainable Aquaculture in Chile
Salmon are recognized as a significant source of protein and Omega-3 fatty acid, and the advent of aquaculture
has enabled these fish to be more widely available. But salmon farming typically requires large quantities of oil
obtained from fish in the ocean to be used during the process. To achieve a more sustainable solution, DuPont
Industrial Biosciences partnered with the World Wildlife Fund and AquaChile to use oil-producing yeast developed
by DuPont in AquaChile’s salmon farming process. This cut the amount of wild fish oil used in the farming process
from four kilograms for every one salmon farmed to one kilogram, maintaining the nutritional value and quality of
the farmed salmon while helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Improved Maize for African Soils
Nitrogen is essential for growing agricultural crops, yet because of its high price, the average farmer in Africa can
only apply one-fifth of the amount of nitrogen needed to maintain adequate soil and crop health. To help local maize
growers in Africa boost yields without applying more nitrogen to their crops, DuPont Pioneer joined the Improved
Maize for African Soils partnership to develop maize varieties and hybrids that use nitrogen much more efficiently.
By applying science to meet these unique local conditions, Pioneer is helping increase incomes for Sub-Saharan
Africa smallholder farmers while ensuring important food supplies for consumers.

For DuPont, sustainability means more than expanding the food supply; it also encompasses social, political,
economic and ecological considerations, such as infrastructure, storage, waste reduction and improving and
preserving water quality – all of which are critical to achieve global food security.
“Golden Grain” Program in India
The state of Punjab in India is a major contributor to the nation’s food grain production, but further progress has
been negatively impacted because of limited access to water that is essential to the state’s vast rice crops. To
solve this problem, DuPont Pioneer partnered with the Punjab government to develop the Golden Grain program
to support local farmers who had been growing rice for generations as they switched to cultivating corn, which
requires less water. Through this crop diversification program Pioneer held seminars to educate local growers,
provide seed and offer ongoing agronomic support. As a result, the state of Punjab is seeing higher, more
sustainable food grain production, and local growers are enjoying increased profitability.
Immune System Support
DuPont Nutrition & Health scientists developed HOWARU®
Protect probiotics to support the body’s natural defenses
and healthy immune systems. The HOWARU®
Protect range is available for food, beverage and dietary supplements.
The probiotics are clinically shown to help children, adults and sport enthusiasts stay healthy, longer: HOWARU®
Protect Adult helps maintain respiratory health; HOWARU®
Protect Kids helps keep children healthy during winter
months, and; HOWARU®
Protect Sport helps physically active adults stay healthy for optimal sports performance.
DuPont’s probiotics are among the most clinically documented. A recent clinical study shows that healthy men and
women who consumed a daily dose of HOWARU®
Protect Adult over a five-month period benefitted from a reduced
risk of upper respiratory tract illness by 27 percent. By using science to make available food supplies even healthier,
DuPont is contributing to a more sustainable future.
Helping Reduce Food Waste
DuPont Nutrition & Health and DuPont Industrial Biosciences are helping to keep baked goods fresher around the
world. Bakery products are one of the most wasted foods and approximately 30 percent of bakery goods such as
bread, cakes and cookies are discarded before ever making it onto our plates. Solutions such as our PowerFresh™
enzyme range play a key role in keeping foods fresher longer, thereby reducing waste at retail and in households.
DuPont Nutrition & Health HOLDBAC®
protective cultures provide efficient spoilage and pathogen prevention in
fermented dairy and meat products, with a natural ability to inhibit specific contamination flora, such as visible
mold, yeasts and listeria bacteria.
Sugarcane Pest Control in India
Sugarcane is an essential commodity for the Indian economy, but a massive sugarcane borer infestation severely
threatened crop yields and the livelihoods of local growers. Working with local farmers in the state of Uttar Pradesh,
located in northern India, DuPont Crop Protection introduced DuPont™
Coragen®
. This insect control product enabled
growers in the region to fight this infestation as DuPont Crop Protection instructed growers on proper application to
their sugarcane fields. As a result, DuPont has helped achieve the long-term eradication of a dangerous crop pest,
allowing sugarcane growers in India to again produce healthy, high-yielding crops.

DuPont Food Security Fact Sheets: Together we can feed the world

  • 1. At DuPont, food security is at the heart of our priorities. Across the globe, DuPont businesses – DuPont Pioneer, Crop Protection, Nutrition & Health, Packaging & Industrial Polymers, and Industrial Biosciences– are addressing food security with science-based innovations. We are building collaborations with businesses, non-profit organizations and governments, and working with local farmers and food producers. In 2010, we convened an external expert panel, The DuPont Advisory Committee on Agricultural Innovation and Productivity for the 21st Century. Chaired by former U.S. Senator Thomas A. Daschle, the panel examines the best public policy mechanisms and business practices that could have the most far-ranging impact on achieving global food security. In response to the Committee’s first report in 2011, DuPont committed to a series of food security goals. The Committee’s work continues and can be found online at foodsecurity.dupont.com DuPont 2020 Food Security Goals In the spirit of “what gets measured gets done,” DuPont announced in 2012, corporate goals to enhance global food security that would be realized by the end of 2020. DuPont encourages all employees to do their part in making food more nutritious, safer and available to people everywhere. Innovating to Feed the World. DuPont committed $10 billion to research and development, and the introduction of 4,000 new products by the end of 2020. The work centers on developing innovations that will produce more food, enhance nutritional value, improve agriculture sustainability, boost food safety, extend food freshness and reduce waste. Engaging and Educating Youth. By the end of 2020, DuPont will facilitate 2 million engagements with young people around the world to transfer the knowledge of sustainable food and agriculture and the impact it will have on a growing population. Improving Rural Communities. DuPont will work to improve the livelihoods of at least 3 million farmers and their rural communities through targeted collaborations and investments that strengthen agricultural systems and make food more available, nutritious and culturally appropriate. This is in addition to the work already being done by DuPont to enhance the lives of hundreds of millions of farmers through our normal business practices. OURCOMMITMENTTOHELPENDHUNGER BUILDINGGLOBALFOODSECURITYBY2020 In the first year of the DuPont Food Security Goals, the following progress was achieved: • $1.2 billion was invested in R&D and 1,000 new products were introduced. • DuPont employees worked with 360,000 youth globally. • DuPont employees engaged with more than 160,000 smallholder farmers. Welcome to the Global Collaboratory.™ Together we can feed the world.
  • 2. DuPont Food Security Goals in Action Bringing New Product Solutions Cutting-edge solutions such as Pioneer® brand corn hybrids with the Optimum® AQUAmax® provide improved drought tolerance and are an example of how DuPont is protecting farmers’ crops and meeting its food security goal of 4,000 new products by 2020. Optimum® AQUAmax® helps farmers minimize risk and maximize productivity by enabling improved yield stability for corn under water-stressed growing conditions. Growing the Next Generation of Food and Agriculture Leaders DuPont will continue its long-standing partnership with 4-H as a means of ensuring we meet our target of 2 million youth engagements by 2020. One initiative involves working with 4-H to engage youth in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Ethiopia to help prepare future food and agriculture leaders for tomorrow’s challenges. Programs include a Leadership Institute for adult 4-H leaders and Enterprise Gardens for building hands-on farming and business training for youth. More than 14,000 youth were involved in these 4-H programs in 2012. Working with Smallholder Dairy Farmers Enriching rural communities starts with improving the livelihoods of farm families. To support our goal of improving the livelihoods of at least 3 million smallholder farmers and their communities by 2020, DuPont is working closely with small farmers in Latin America to reduce milk waste at dairy farms and to help them produce quality cheese more consistently and hygienically. DuPont™ Danisco® Marschall® brand rennet is a complex enzyme in a simple tablet form that modifies milk protein to form a curd and make cheese. Local DuPont employees work collaboratively with Latin American farmers to implement this technology on their smallholder operations to bring stability and profitability to rural regions. DuPont made these commitments out of a core belief that there is a science to feeding the world and ensuring food security. However, this task is so large and multifaceted that no one country, let alone one company, has all the answers. It will take all of us working together to feed the world. Visit foodsecurity.dupont.com to learn more. To learn more about food security challenges and opportunities in more than 100 countries, visit The Economist’s Intelligence Unit’s Global Food Security Index, sponsored by DuPont, at www.foodsecurityindex.eiu.com Copyright © 2014 DuPont. • 3. The world continues to face the unprecedented challenge of feeding a global population that will exceed 9 billion by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) projects that farmers will need to nearly double the world’s total food production to meet the growing demand. Most of these gains will need to be made by the 500 million smallholder farmers who produce much of the agricultural output in developing countries, and they will need to do so with less arable land and water. We must also address the crisis of food waste. Each year, one third of the food produced globally is wasted. Near term gains in food security may start with securing the food already produced. Overcoming the threats to our global food supply requires taking scientific innovation well beyond the lab. It means taking innovation into fields and local communities, especially in developing economies such as Sub- Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia where the majority of the chronically malnourished population live. DuPont businesses – DuPont Pioneer, Crop Protection, Nutrition and Health, Packaging & Industrial Polymers, and Industrial Biosciences – are working together and are committed to making food more nutritious, safer and available to people everywhere. Our approach to delivering science-based innovation is built upon four pillars: • SCIENCE IS UNIVERSAL, BUT FOOD SECURITY SOLUTIONS MUST BE LOCAL: Innovative solutions should be driven by the needs of those whose lives we are trying to improve. Farmers need access to world-class science, technology and tools that will improve productivity, profitability and farm management. Solutions must start with local needs, whether it’s an Indonesian farmer who needs a corn hybrid adapted to his local growing conditions or a Kenyan girl who is going blind because she does not have enough Vitamin A in her diet. • COLLABORATION UNLOCKS THE ANSWERS SCIENCE PROVIDES: Solutions must be collaborative—reached in concert with communities, governments, NGOs and farmers who know the “facts on the ground” and with global businesses who have the specialized expertise or resources to help solve particular problems. In short, collaboration must have no limits, for answers are everywhere. • SCIENCE MUST BECOME LOCAL WISDOM: Know-how must be brought to the people and places that need it most, working side-by-side with all involved to share knowledge with farmers and communities who can use it to secure their futures. Sharing technology with farmers means more than just agronomic information or products; it means providing access to market information, communications technology, financing and crop storage. • SOLUTIONS MUST BE SUSTAINABLE IN THE BROADEST SENSE OF THE WORD. Solutions for food security should consider environmental, economic, political and cultural factors. This means making the required investments in infrastructure, technology, and community development. And, it means empowering women, who make up the majority of smallholder farmers, and educating and inspiring young people to be future farmers and nutritionists. THERE’SASCIENCETOFEEDINGTHE WORLDANDENSURINGFOODSECURITY Welcome to the Global Collaboratory.™ Together we can feed the world.
  • 4. DuPont and its collaborators are working to create solutions to the challenges of food security. Increasing food quantity, improving food quality, and reducing food waste will make a significant impact on people’s lives and livelihoods. Our consistent presence along the food value chain allows us to holistically address the complex set of issues and vulnerabilities – country by country – that together define food security. Looking Ahead The world has made continuous progress towards eradicating extreme hunger and poverty. Developing countries have nearly halved the proportion of those suffering from hunger. Scientific innovations have succeeded in significantly enhancing the quality and quantity of food production. Innovations include maximizing the productivity potential of seeds – even in harsh conditions; keeping crops pest and disease free; enhancing the nutritional value of staple foods; and reducing waste by keeping food fresher longer. And, business, governments and NGOs have collaborated to help farmers, particularly smallholder farmers, gain access to the right tools – from the most basic local practices to the most advanced technologies to connect farmers to markets. Nonetheless, we cannot ignore the significant challenges that remain. Dupont is committed to these actions to accelerate progress locally on food and nutrition security: • Unleash innovation to produce more nutritious food; • Develop ways to make food more accessible and affordable; • Improve trade policy to better enable the free flow of food from where it can best be produced to where it is most needed; • Address food waste crisis by improving agriculture and food systems, extending freshness and diet diversification; • Develop strategies for tackling undernourishment as well as over consumption of empty calories; • Improve linkages along food and agriculture value chain and invite other sectors to the table; and • Help make food and agriculture economically viable professions and encourage youth to choose these livelihoods. Solutions to the challenges of achieving worldwide food security are built on today’s successes. However, no one company, country or non-profit organization can meet these challenges alone. Each of us can commit to doing our part and holding ourselves accountable to make a meaningful contribution to this global challenge that has ramifications for all citizens, governments and businesses. Because, quite simply, feeding the world is everyone’s business. Copyright © 2014 DuPont. All rights reserved. • 5. Although science provides answers that can be applied universally, DuPont’s experience shows that solutions must be found at the local level to help people improve their lives and livelihoods. DuPont Pioneer EncircaSM Services As farming operations become more complex and data intensive, growers increasingly need tools that enable them to take advantage of all the information available. With that challenge in mind, DuPont Pioneer developed EncircaSM , a suite of farm management services designed to provide growers with timely and actionable insights to maximize productivity and profitability. The services include applications for mobile devices that allow growers to scan a seed tag and indicate their planter type to maximize planter performance and seed drop accuracy, or to monitor their fields in real-time for precipitation and growth stage development. Customized Food Safety Solutions The DuPont™ BAX® System, created by DuPont Nutrition & Health, is used around the world to identify bacterial contamination in food at the genetic level. Because standards and regulations for pathogen detection can vary from country to country, DuPont may develop customized solutions for local needs. For example, U.S. regulations mandate that food products must be free of listeria bacteria, so the BAX® System tests for its presence or absence. In the European Union, however, a threshold for listeria bacteria has been established in certain foods that do not offer a medium for growth, so DuPont developed an alternative protocol to detect listeria bacteria above or below the allowable thresholds. Addressing Malnutrition in Mexico The Tarahumera people, a Native American tribe who live in a remote area of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, have suffered declining water supplies for years, resulting in crop loss, malnutrition and hunger. When a local company wanted to provide the Tarahumera people with supplies of milk to help meet their nutritional needs, it sought a solution that would allow the milk to be preserved for up to 12 months without refrigeration in a package that would withstand the long overland journey. DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers partnered with a local manufacturer to provide DuPont Surlyn® resin as a sealant for a dual-chamber package design that separated purified water and powdered milk, allowing them to be easily combined when ready to be consumed. This collaborative effort has helped provide valuable nutritional assistance to a population enduring difficult local conditions. Best Off-Patent Crop Protection Innovation The Agrow Awards were developed to recognize excellence in the crop protection and production industry. DuPont received this award for the development of an herbicide dispensing system that offers growers customized weed control. The system replaces standard rigid plastic jugs. Used in the United States and Canada, DuPont™ PrecisionPac™ dispenses the exact amount of product or product mixture customized for the size of the farmer’s field or sprayer load. This enables farmers to respond to rapidly changing weed control needs. SCIENCEISUNIVERSAL,BUTFOOD SOLUTIONSMUSTBELOCAL Welcome to the Global Collaboratory.™ Together we can feed the world. • 6. The convictions that know-how must be brought to the people and places that need it the most is central to the DuPont approach. Working side-by-side with the population in education and outreach efforts, we transfer knowledge to the communities who will use it to secure their future. Philippines Vermiculture Project Decades of corn production in the village of Glamang in the Philippines left farmers there facing steadily declining soil fertility conditions. To promote a sustainable solution to this problem, DuPont Pioneer collaborated with local government agencies to introduce a vermiculture program to farmers. Vermiculture is a method by which organic farm waste is converted to nutrient-rich fertilizer in a small shed and then applied to crop fields. By ensuring proper methods were taught to local farmers, Pioneer encouraged growers in the village to build more than 100 vermiculture sheds producing enough organic fertilizer to service 135 hectares of fields. Vietnam Rice Model Farm Program To achieve its future food security and self-sufficiency goals, the government of Vietnam has made increasing domestic agriculture production a priority. Recognizing this increased production must be done in a more sustainable way while delivering higher crop yields, DuPont Pioneer collaborated with the Thanh Hoa province government to develop the Rice Model Farm Program to share valuable know-how with local farmers. At two model farms in the province, Pioneer provides local growers a series of demonstrations throughout the growing cycle to educate them on effective hybrid rice farming techniques. Farmers are taught proper seed selection, soil health management, pest control, water conservation, and harvesting and post-harvesting practices. By arming farmers with this knowledge, Pioneer is helping Vietnam achieve a more secure food future. Benefits of “Cover Crops” in the U.S. In the U.S., DuPont is using its expertise to advise farmers of the benefits of planting “cover crops” to promote sustainable agriculture. Cover crops are those including oats or rye that are seeded into existing crops such as corn or soybean to control weeds, prevent erosion, and improve soil health. These cover crops are also beneficial alternatives in regions such as the Midwest that are susceptible to weather-related “prevented planting” when heavy rains or drought prevent planting of soybean or corn during the growing season. Planting cover crops is a relatively new practice, but DuPont Pioneer is helping farmers realize it can pay significant dividends in terms of land stewardship and crop yields. Soy Protein Supplement for Malawi Together with local growers, producers and distributors, DuPont Nutrition & Heath has introduced a nutrient-dense soy protein supplement to Malawi, Africa, as part of a solution to help curb malnutrition. DuPont food scientists provide Rab Processors with soy protein and processing support for a good-tasting nutritional food supplement. Called Sibusiso® , the Zulu word for “blessing,” the product is made from locally grown groundnuts and DuPont soy protein. The supplement does not require cooking or refrigeration and supports Malawi’s farmers and country economy in addition to a good food source for Malawi’s citizens. • 7. Around the globe, DuPont works with farmers, local businesses, governments, NGOs and others who know the facts on the ground in order to find answers that will increase productions, reduce waste and deliver nutrition to those most in need. Africa Biofortified Sorghum Initiative Sorghum is an affordable staple food for more than 300 million people in Africa, yet it lacks most essential nutrients. To solve this nutritional challenge, DuPont Pioneer joined the Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) Initiative, a public-private partnership to develop sorghum seeds with increased pro-vitamin A, zinc and iron content, and then build the production and distribution capability to get biofortified sorghum to farmers in Africa. As a result, not only has the level of pro-vitamin A been improved to levels that result in delivery of 100 percent of the daily Vitamin A requirement in children, but the stability of pro-vitamin A during grain storage also has been dramatically improved. China’s School Milk Program DuPont is working with partners and government representatives to ensure China’s young students not only have access to high-quality, nutritious milk, but also that the milk is properly formulated for their tastes. Working to help improve nutrition for children in China, DuPont and New Hope Dairy Co. developed specially formulated milk for China’s National School Milk Program. DuPont partnered with New Hope Dairy Co. to develop the best possible recipes for varieties of milk that would appeal to different children’s tastes in different regions across China. This National School Milk Program now supplies about 12.5 million students with safe, healthy milk every day. Sustainable Aquaculture in Chile Salmon are recognized as a significant source of protein and Omega-3 fatty acid, and the advent of aquaculture has enabled these fish to be more widely available. But salmon farming typically requires large quantities of oil obtained from fish in the ocean to be used during the process. To achieve a more sustainable solution, DuPont Industrial Biosciences partnered with the World Wildlife Fund and AquaChile to use oil-producing yeast developed by DuPont in AquaChile’s salmon farming process. This cut the amount of wild fish oil used in the farming process from four kilograms for every one salmon farmed to one kilogram, maintaining the nutritional value and quality of the farmed salmon while helping to preserve marine ecosystems. Improved Maize for African Soils Nitrogen is essential for growing agricultural crops, yet because of its high price, the average farmer in Africa can only apply one-fifth of the amount of nitrogen needed to maintain adequate soil and crop health. To help local maize growers in Africa boost yields without applying more nitrogen to their crops, DuPont Pioneer joined the Improved Maize for African Soils partnership to develop maize varieties and hybrids that use nitrogen much more efficiently. By applying science to meet these unique local conditions, Pioneer is helping increase incomes for Sub-Saharan Africa smallholder farmers while ensuring important food supplies for consumers. • 8. For DuPont, sustainability means more than expanding the food supply; it also encompasses social, political, economic and ecological considerations, such as infrastructure, storage, waste reduction and improving and preserving water quality – all of which are critical to achieve global food security. “Golden Grain” Program in India The state of Punjab in India is a major contributor to the nation’s food grain production, but further progress has been negatively impacted because of limited access to water that is essential to the state’s vast rice crops. To solve this problem, DuPont Pioneer partnered with the Punjab government to develop the Golden Grain program to support local farmers who had been growing rice for generations as they switched to cultivating corn, which requires less water. Through this crop diversification program Pioneer held seminars to educate local growers, provide seed and offer ongoing agronomic support. As a result, the state of Punjab is seeing higher, more sustainable food grain production, and local growers are enjoying increased profitability. Immune System Support DuPont Nutrition & Health scientists developed HOWARU® Protect probiotics to support the body’s natural defenses and healthy immune systems. The HOWARU® Protect range is available for food, beverage and dietary supplements. The probiotics are clinically shown to help children, adults and sport enthusiasts stay healthy, longer: HOWARU® Protect Adult helps maintain respiratory health; HOWARU® Protect Kids helps keep children healthy during winter months, and; HOWARU® Protect Sport helps physically active adults stay healthy for optimal sports performance. DuPont’s probiotics are among the most clinically documented. A recent clinical study shows that healthy men and women who consumed a daily dose of HOWARU® Protect Adult over a five-month period benefitted from a reduced risk of upper respiratory tract illness by 27 percent. By using science to make available food supplies even healthier, DuPont is contributing to a more sustainable future. Helping Reduce Food Waste DuPont Nutrition & Health and DuPont Industrial Biosciences are helping to keep baked goods fresher around the world. Bakery products are one of the most wasted foods and approximately 30 percent of bakery goods such as bread, cakes and cookies are discarded before ever making it onto our plates. Solutions such as our PowerFresh™ enzyme range play a key role in keeping foods fresher longer, thereby reducing waste at retail and in households. DuPont Nutrition & Health HOLDBAC® protective cultures provide efficient spoilage and pathogen prevention in fermented dairy and meat products, with a natural ability to inhibit specific contamination flora, such as visible mold, yeasts and listeria bacteria. Sugarcane Pest Control in India Sugarcane is an essential commodity for the Indian economy, but a massive sugarcane borer infestation severely threatened crop yields and the livelihoods of local growers. Working with local farmers in the state of Uttar Pradesh, located in northern India, DuPont Crop Protection introduced DuPont™ Coragen® . This insect control product enabled growers in the region to fight this infestation as DuPont Crop Protection instructed growers on proper application to their sugarcane fields. As a result, DuPont has helped achieve the long-term eradication of a dangerous crop pest, allowing sugarcane growers in India to again produce healthy, high-yielding crops.
