Flood and drought mitigation - Matt MachielseYourAlberta
Matt, Assistant Deputy Minister with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development presented at Alberta’s Watershed Management Symposium: Flood and Drought Mitigation. He explained key findings from the Government of Alberta’s flood mitigation engineering studies are presented, along with next steps for major flood mitigation projects.
Drought conditions in KwaZulu-Natal over the past two years have highlighted the need for both short-term drought relief and long-term water resource development. Several emergency measures have been implemented to transfer water to dams and one water supplier has begun treating wastewater to drinking water standards and mixing it into the domestic supply. However, over-abstraction and inefficient water use have exacerbated the drought, emphasizing the importance of water conservation. Long-term, a large transfer from the uMkhomazi River and other interventions are planned to meet growing demand, but delays could result in major shortfalls within a few years. Studies are also considering options like desalination or abstraction from the lower uMk
The National Drought Mitigation Center's Drought Risk AtlasDRIscience
The National Drought Mitigation Center has created a Drought Risk Atlas that allows users to compare drought periods across different locations and times. Brian Fuchs presented the Drought Risk Atlas at the United States Drought Monitor Forum in Reno, NV in April 2015. The atlas contains historical drought data and allows live demonstrations of drought conditions for specific locations, such as Ft. Bidwell, CA in 1977. Fuchs welcomed any questions from attendees about the Drought Risk Atlas and can be contacted through the National Drought Mitigation Center.
China has been suffering from its worst drought in 50 years since last winter. Over 18 million people have been affected, with some 670,000 people lacking access to drinking water. The drought has threatened major wheat-growing areas and millions of farmers' livelihoods across northern China. Crops have failed and cattle have died over swaths of farmland, with approximately 43% of China's crops unable to be harvested.
The city of Wichita Falls has declared a Stage 3 Drought Emergency due to record low rainfall and high temperatures over the past two years that have significantly lowered the city's water levels. New water restrictions have been implemented, including limiting irrigation to once per week between midnight and 5am or 8pm and midnight depending on the system used, prohibiting irrigation on Saturdays and Sundays, restricting golf course and pool water use, and levying surcharges on water bills to encourage conservation. The city is asking local media to help keep the public informed and aware of the ongoing drought conditions and water restrictions through consistent messaging.

Ron Nehring's Post-Pakistan Mission ReportRon Nehring
In May 2011 Ron Nehring served as a member of a State Department-sponsored delegation to Pakistan. The mission took place 12 days following the death of Osama Bin Laden in Abbotabad, Pakistan. This PowerPoint presentation provides a report on the mission and conditions in the country at the time.
Pakistan faces many challenges at the beginning of the second decade of the 21stcentury:
• Decades-long struggle with macroeconomic stabilisation arising from unsustainable fiscal policies
• Pressure of demography
• Legacy of economic distortions
• Battering from external events, including earthquakes, floods and a continuing
longstanding low intensity conflict
• A large and loss-making public sector that impedes market development
• Low and declining productivity
• Heightened expectations of the population for a better life from a democratic
government.
Our growth experience of the last four decades has been volatile annual growth and
declining trend in long run growth patterns. In addition, productivity growth (a
measure of efficiency) has been low in comparison to our comparators. For the last
four years per-capita incomes have not increased in real terms while double-digit
inflation has prevailed.

A case of energy diplomacy
Dr Vaqar Ahmed July 20, 2014
Pakistan must compete for limited pockets of energy surplus in the region for inclusive and sustainable economic growth
This document provides an overview of the Pakistan Strategy Support Program (PSSP) conducted by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The PSSP is a 4-year country-led program aimed at contributing to pro-poor economic growth and food security in Pakistan. It involves guidance from a National Advisory Committee and collaboration between IFPRI and other Pakistani institutions. The PSSP covers research themes in agricultural production, water policy, macroeconomics, poverty dynamics, and capacity building. It also details current and planned research projects within these themes and highlights the program's competitive grants program.
This document provides an overview and strategy for the Pakistan equity market in 2017. It summarizes that most rerating of the market has already occurred, with limited potential for further gains. Earnings growth is expected to slow as competitive pressures rise. The market is underpricing macroeconomic risks from a deteriorating current account and overvalued currency. A sideways market with low returns is seen as the most likely scenario, suggesting a more defensive investment approach focusing on dividends.
Three key methods Singapore uses to deter aggressors are:
1. A citizen armed force through compulsory national service.
2. Developing a 3rd Generation armed forces through research and technology.
3. Building a domestic defense industry for self-reliance.
While deterrence is important, diplomacy is also needed to peacefully resolve conflicts and maintain important relationships that support Singapore's security. Singapore practices diplomacy through bilateral relations, regional associations like ASEAN, and international cooperation.
The document summarizes Pakistan's Trade Policy for 2009-2012. It outlines the policy's aims of promoting economic growth, employment opportunities, and poverty alleviation through private sector development and investment in human resources. It reviews Pakistan's export and import trends, identifying challenges like the global economic slowdown, high costs, and security issues. Opportunities mentioned include market access through trade agreements and potential in various industries. The strategic framework aims to address supply constraints and better connect supply and demand through synergizing various policies.
Us pak relation after killing of osama bin ladenPintu Khan
The document discusses the history and current state of relations between Pakistan and the United States. It notes that the killing of Osama bin Laden may significantly impact the U.S.-Pakistan relationship going forward. Most Pakistanis disapprove of the U.S. raid and see bin Laden's death as a bad thing. Many also believe relations between the two countries will worsen as a result. However, if handled properly, bin Laden's death could be an opportunity to improve collaboration between the U.S. and Pakistan.
National & international communication by Amber Malik & Hina NawabAmber Malik
The New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO) emerged in the 1970s as developing countries protested the dominance of Western news agencies in global information flows. NWICO aimed to foster more equitable communications between developed and developing worlds. Major issues included the unbalanced flow of media from developed to developing countries, unfair allocation of radio spectrum and geostationary orbits, and lack of input from developing countries in decisions around satellite technologies and communication standards. While NWICO discussions aimed to address global imbalances, the United States opposed it as a threat to free press.
The document discusses several topics related to international relations including diplomacy, the United Nations, international anti-terrorism efforts, Singapore's vulnerability to terrorism, international humanitarian efforts, and the benefits of international relationships. It provides examples of cooperation between countries through organizations like the UN and exercises. Singapore has participated in relief efforts for disasters and contributed forces to respond to events like Hurricane Katrina. Building relationships between countries can foster cooperation and support in times of crisis.
The document discusses definitions of disasters and defines them as sudden calamitous events that cause great damage, loss, destruction and devastation to life and property. Disasters are inevitable and their damage depends on location, climate, earth surface type and vulnerability. Both natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods etc and man-made disasters such as chemical or nuclear incidents are discussed. Safety measures are provided for different disasters like taking shelter during earthquakes or cyclones.
Droughts are caused by human activities like driving vehicles and operating factories that increase pollution and decrease oxygen in the air. Droughts negatively impact people by potentially causing malnourishment or starvation as farmers are unable to grow crops without rain to sell food and make money.
India is highly vulnerable to drought, with 68% of its area prone to drought in varying degrees. Drought is classified as meteorological, hydrological, or agricultural based on impacts. India's drought management strategies include employment generation programs, social security programs, monitoring systems, institutional mechanisms, financial arrangements, and community participation. External assistance is accepted voluntarily to support nutrition, health, community capacity and water harvesting. The presentation emphasizes that drought can be prevented, mitigated and hardships reduced through coordinated management efforts across levels of government.
The document provides an analysis of the Pakistan stock market and outlook for 2015. Some key points:
- The KSE-100 index gained 27% in 2014 due to improving macroeconomic conditions under the PML-N government.
- The index is expected to gain another 10-14% in 2015, reaching a target of 38,000-40,000 points, supported by continued economic recovery, privatization deals, stable politics, and 14% earnings growth.
- Key catalysts for market gains in 2015 include ongoing economic reforms, improved political stability, large privatization transactions, strong corporate earnings growth, and potential increase in Pakistan's weighting in frontier market indices.
This strategy will reinforce IFPRI’s position as an evidence-based research organization that partners for impact and will help achieve the
Institute’s vision of a world free of hunger and malnutrition.
Pakistan's foreign policy aims to protect its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It focuses on maintaining relations with all states, addressing economic and trade issues, strengthening ties with Muslim states, and showing solidarity with developing countries. Key issues include the disputed Kashmir region with India, relations with major powers like the US and China, and participation in international organizations like the UN. The policy seeks to promote anti-colonialism, self-determination, arms control, and counterterrorism.

Tidal energy is a renewable source of energy that harnesses the power of tides. It has several advantages, including being renewable as tides are driven by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, being a green energy source that doesn't emit greenhouse gases, and having a predictable output. However, tidal energy also has disadvantages such as potentially impacting the environment, only being available when tides are surging for around 10 hours per day so requiring effective energy storage, and being an expensive new technology that is not yet cost-effective.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
