INTRODUCTION
The marsh funnel has a fixed opening with a specific diameter and is constructed of break-
resistant plastic. To prevent larger particles from obstructing the orifice, a fixed mesh located
toward the top spans half of the cone. The high-impact plastic measuring cup features fluid
ounce and cubic centimetre scales, and it is specifically made to be used with a marsh funnel
viscometer.
The ratio of the sample fluid's velocity through the orifice to the force driving the fluid's flow
is known as the marsh funnel viscosity, or funnel flow time. The time it takes for 946
centimetres of sample fluid to exit a fully loaded marsh funnel is known as the viscosity of the
marsh funnel.
OBJECTIVE
The marsh funnel viscometer is a simple device used for quick measurements of fluid viscosity.

Test Equipment
The Marsh Funnel is a device that is common to every drilling rig.
Details of the Marsh Funnel and receiving cup are shown in Figure. The standard funnel is
12" long, has a 6" diameter at the top and a 2" long, 3/16" diameter tube at the bottom. A mud
sample is poured into the funnel and the time taken for one quart(946 ml) to flow out into a
measuring cup is recorded (Fresh water at 75°F has a funnel viscosity of 26 sec/quart.). The
viscosity is reported in seconds allowed to flow out of the funnel. API specifications call for
1500 ml and one quart (946 ml) out. Material used is:
1- Water
2-Stop watch
3-Marsh funnel viscosity
4- Drilling mud
Calibration
Fill the funnel to the bottom of the screen (1500 ml) with water time of outflow of the quart
(946 ml) should be 26 seconds plus or minus 1/2 second.

Procedure
1-With the funnel in an upright position, cover the orifice with a Finger and pour the freshly
collected mud sample through the Screen into a clean, dry funnel until the fluid level reaches
the Bottom of the screen (1500 ml).
2- Immediately remove the finger from the outlet and measure the time required for the mud
to fill the receiving vessel to the 1- quart (946 ml) level.
3-Report the result to the nearest second as Marsh Funnel Viscosity at the temperature of the
measurement in degrees Fahrenheit or Centigrade.
Calculation
A Marsh Funnel is used to measure the density of the drilling fluid which is 1.2 g/cm3 in 50
seconds.
Calculate the effective viscosity.
Given data mud density = 1.2 g/cm3 time = 50 sec
μe = ρM ( tM – 25 )
μe = 1.2 ( 50 – 25 )
μe = 30 cp
At laboratory we used water because we don’t have that big volume of mud
Given data = 1 g/cm3, time = 26 sec
μe = ρM ( tM – 25 )
μe = 1 ( 26 – 25 )

DISCUSSION
Q1- What’s the benefit of marsh funnel in the field?
A/ The marsh funnel is beneficial in the field because it provides a quick and simple way to
measure the viscosity of drilling fluids, helping engineers optimize drilling operations by
adjusting fluid compositions accordingly.
Q2-descripe useful screen over the top funnel (mesh)?
The mesh screen placed over the top of the funnel acts as a filter to prevent debris or particles
from entering the funnel, ensuring accurate viscosity measurements by allowing only the
fluid to pass through.
Q3-could you describe a main cause get error at marsh funnel test?
One main cause of errors in a marsh funnel test is inadequate calibration or maintenance of
the equipment, leading to inaccurate viscosity measurements.
Q4- What’s the main function of viscosity in mud?
The main function of viscosity in mud is to provide hydraulic pressure control and lubrication
during drilling operations, ensuring efficient removal of cuttings from the borehole and
preventing well instability.
conclusion
We have done this type of testing with all three Dr. colleagues and this type of testing allows
us to be more involved and be able to make drilling mud as suggested and measure its viscosity
with a simple technique using funnel viscosity and an equation to find effective viscosity.
