Assumption that the user's information need is static and the
information seeking process is one of successively refining a query

• We agree that after few attempts to find the

15. Differences Between Novice and Experienced Users in
Searching Information on The World Wide Web
Hurtienne and Wandtke, 1997
Online users are confronted with rapidly increasing amounts of information
as epitomized by the buzzword "information overload." While skills necessary
for browsing individual websites seem to be available to users after only
minimal training
Pollock and Hockley, 1997
considerably more experience is required for query-based searching
Chen, Houston, Sewell, and Schatz, 1998
User must have experience with the system where the information is
stored, including skills in navigating through the information system and
knowledge of how the information is organized
16. WEB EXPERT
• We also found that web experts make use of
advanced search options like Boolean
operators, modifiers, phrase search etc., much
more frequently than the average user
• Experts frequently complained about lacking
relevant domain knowledge regarding
individual search questions and were highly
aware of this obstacle while being confident
of their technical competence.
17. Conclusion
• Information Retrieval skills is important to find
accurate information on the net
• To categorized novice user and expert user is
based on how the information is retrieved and
how reliable the information that has been
retrieved.
• Enhancing general knowledge and also subject
matter expertise is crucial in information
retrieval skills and knowledge

answer second question more confident and with improve
technique of searching
20. Describe Your Experience in Searching
Information
I would say that question given to us was very challenging and
interesting. This is the first time I was given question that looks easy
and confidently I felt that I can easily answer all the question.
Surprisingly after seeking information for the first two question, I felt
frustrated cannot finding the exact answer within the time that I have
set. if the question within the range of my general knowledge, I can
easily answer that less than 10 minutes. If the question not within my
general knowledge or subject expert. It takes me longer time to
understand the question and also finding the meaning of few terms
and definition related to questions. After manage to find all the
answer my frustration become a happy ending to me, It makes me
wanted to find more information on the web. Thanks Dr. Fuziah for
given us such a beautiful experience seeking on the web. This seeking
experience will give me a clear view of the roles of reference desk and
also librarian in this challenging virtual world.
