The Chief Academic Officer at Shelby County Schools sent a letter to colleagues about using the remaining weeks of May to better prepare for the upcoming school year. Many schools are leveraging momentum from recent district-wide learning days, particularly around implementing a comprehensive literacy improvement plan and college and career readiness goals. School teams are taking this time outside of testing seasons to deepen their understanding of these topics, try new instructional practices, and identify future professional learning needs before full implementation in August. The Chief Academic Officer looks forward to continuing working with everyone to prepare for a successful new school year.

Ramfrez, PhD Chief Academic Officer While May is generally seen as the winding down of the school year, I am very excited to know that many of our schools and staffs are working hard to use these few weeks to better prepare our students, teachers, coaches, and leaders for a successful start to the 2015-16 school year. Many sites are levera~in~ the momentum that we c~ated with the Districtwide Learnin~ Day(s) (DLD). particularly around implementation ofthe Comprehensive Literacy Improvement Plan (CLIP) and our broader goals for College and Career Readiness (CCR) as laid out in Destination 2025. School teams are taking advantage of this rare window of opportunity-outside of the student testing and teacher evaluation seasons--- to deepen their understanding of CCR and CLIP, try new instructional practices in a "safe space" (e.g., gradual release, integration literacy and language learning objectives in the content areas, meaningful literacy stations), and identify professional learning needs and opportunities to prepare for full implementation in August.
