These lesions were believed to represent non-neoplastic hamartomatous changes and lacked mass effect or enhancement. The study concluded these lesions are common in around 50% of children with NF-1 and represent benign vacuolar changes in myelin that increase in size and intensity from ages 8-10 years before fading in adolescence.
