The document analyzes a double page spread from Q magazine. It notes that the spread uses a consistent color scheme of red, black, and white which are commonly seen in music magazines. A large red "T" stands out and draws the reader's eye to a picture of the band Arcade Fire. While text takes up most of the space, the image breaks it up and provides visual interest such as matching the woman's dress to the color scheme. A skyline graphic provides context on the band and article.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. I have chosen Q magazine to analyse a double page spread, here is what I found from looking at these pages. Firstly, they have stuck to the use of 3 main colours: red, black and white. These colours are commonly used throughout music magazines as the red is bold and stands out to the audience. The large red T used on the left hand page is dominant, and will catch the eye of the reading, leading them to the picture of the artists (Win Butler and Regine Chassagne) Furthermore, the text takes up the majority of the double page, but the image adds a bit off difference to the double page spread. For example, the artist’s dress is similar to the colour code in the double page spread, but the image of the artists breaks up the dominance of the text. A Skyline has been showed to inform the reader on what the band is called, as well as offering the article name and interesting trivia for the reader.
3. Skyline – shows the band name and the purpose of the article. It also adds key facts for the readers’ entertainment. Main image – the dress of the woman in the image matches the colour scheme of the double page spread Colour scheme – made up of the colours red, black and white. Bold fonts – used to draw in the attention of the readers
