Opening:
Did you ever feel like this sisyphus while leading a transformation project?
I did!
And in the following 5 min shat I did to overcome this feeling
My name is Bastian Bukatz
In the past 12 years I’ve been involved in several Transformation projects
In the same time I raised three children.
During this time I realized, that many things that do work or don’t work in child education have similar effect in transformation projects.
I will provide you three lessens I learned from my children that helped me to be more successful as a transformation coach
The first lesson I learned is about trust.
Children trust their parents just blindfolded.
In my professional work, I needed to invest a lot to gain just a part of that trust.
I asked myself, how does affects my impact in my professional environment.
But, what is trust:
With Trust I mean believing that it’s true and right what someone says and does.
Just like young children do with their parents.
Why is trust so important?
Because, you can only coach people, that trust you. Without trust, all effort to in fluence others is forgiven.
Trust is the root of change.
But what did I do to gain trust?
First I realized, that everybody does his best from his own perspective
I Talked open about my weaknesses and mistakes.
That helped me a lot especially when I was in a leadership position.
Don’t try to be a superhero, who is only there when everything is on fire.
Don`t try to be flawless.
This is not authentic and you will loose the link to the people.
The second lesion is about care.
As a father I ask myself everyday, what can I do for my children to support their development.
I thought about, how would it affect my impact at work if I I try to support my colleagues in a similar manner.
So what do I mean with caring about others
With care I mean helping people to achieve their ther goals. Especially helping to get back on track in demanding situations.
By the way this will also support trust.
I recognized, that helping others in their development gives a new drive to the whole team.
The more successful my colleagues are in their personal formation, the bigger was is momentum of change in my team.
Caring it the new Coaching and was my chance to amplify change
Ask your co-workers about their dreams, visions and goals.
Try to support them wherever you can.
This will strengthen the change capability of your team a lot.
Don’t try to make your goals to the goals of others.
They will never really try to achieve them and you will demotivate them in their development.
Lesson 3:
As a father I often think about where are my possibilities to guide my children in their development.
Because I want to help my children to learn things that I think are good for them.
This same question
With steering I simply mean influencing the development of others with the goal do give it a direction that I thing is useful for the organization’s transformation.
By influencing everybody's personal development to support the transformation you want to achieve
You are able to make a purposeful movement out of these personal changes
I recognized, if people trust trust and I give them the right support, they will accept me as a role model.
Trying to be a good role model is my steering wheel of transformation.
What I experienced does not work is trying to manipulate your colleagues with reward and punishment.
I am convinced that this will only have a short-term effect
Trust is the root of change. No Trust no Change
Caring about others is your amplifier of Change
And being a role model is your Steering wheel in a transformation process
Closing:
I hope you liked slightly different sight of transformations projects that made my hill a little bit less stiff.
It would be great to see some of you in the open space session “differences between child education and leadership”
