The International Adventures of hitchBot
HitchBot is a hitchhiking robot created by researchers at McMaster University and Ryerson University to interact with humans. In 2014, HitchBot successfully hitchhiked across Canada over 10,000 kilometers in under a month by obtaining 19 rides from strangers. HitchBot later attempted to hitchhike across the US in 2015 but was vandalized in Philadelphia and had to end its trip. The creators view this as a setback but not a failure, as they plan to send HitchBot on future adventures.
Robotic Cockroach Foreshadows Major Industry Changes
The document discusses a new robotic cockroach developed by the University of California, Berkeley in association with the United States Army Research Laboratory. Researchers designed the small robot by studying and mimicking the biological design and inner composition of real cockroaches. He has since developed a keen interest in domestic robots. SoftBank recently introduced Pepper, a 4-foot tall humanoid robot that can learn, evolve, and love. Pepper will be released to the public in February 2015 for $2,000 and will utilize cloud technology to improve based on its owner's preferences. Pepper is currently on display at two SoftBank locations where it counts shoppers and those smiling.

- 2. Based in Pennsylvania, Jacob Newberger has experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on robotics and automatic control systems. Jacob Newberger is particularly interested in fast-evolving trends in domestic robotics, which center around home automation. Rather than the human-like androids of science fiction, the current wave of home robots tend to have mundane functions as appliances. One of the most popular of these is the disc- shaped automatic vacuuming device Roomba by iRobot. After mapping out a room or area to clean, the Roomba travels across the space in a zigzag pattern and thoroughly cleans it. The latest models can be scheduled to perform tasks independently, at specified times. iRobot additionally has a Scooba device on the market, which washes floors as it vacuums.
- 3. Electrolux has improved on this technology with the Trilobite, which employs advanced ultrasound sensors for navigating the home environment. Other innovative devices from iRobot include the long, narrow Looj, which is specifically designed for clearing outside rain gutters. Also focused on the outdoors, Friendly Robotics’ Robomow is an automatic lawn mower that runs on batteries and has an anti-theft system in place. These and other leading-edge products are revolutionizing the way in which daily home-maintenance tasks are performed.
