Design Careers in the Science Fiction FutureBill DeRouchey
What design challenges may exist when today’s junior designers are tomorrow’s design leaders? This extrapolates on current technology trends to speculate on what new design challenges may develop over the next 20 years, and how we can prepare ourselves for the unknown future.
A dominant debate over the past decade has been whether AI will eventually replace people.
About this event
A dominant debate over the past decade has been whether AI will eventually replace people.
Will this result in less jobs, or even a world without jobs? Most economists argue that AI will create jobs, at least at the rate that they are lost to AI. In other words, a pool of jobs will exist, except that they will be different. That sounds mildly reassuring.
But Oxford Professor Daniel Susskind breaks rank with his latest book, "A World Without Work." He argues very thoroughly and convincingly that it’s only a matter of time before machines created a world without work.
Susskind states that, “the demand for the work of human beings is likely to wither away, gradually.” His arguments for this are very compelling, quite frankly.
Join me for this interesting discussion about the future of work which comes from you latest book, "The Future of HR."
The genius of Daniel Susskind’s book, A World Without Work, lies in its ability to make a complex subject like labor economics and impact of automation, accessible to the lay reader. Even if you have no background in economics and lead a prosaic life, like most people, this book will expand your mental horizons.
Grady Booch proposes embodied cognition as placing Watson's cognitive capabilities into physical robots, avatars, spaces and objects. This would allow Watson to perceive the world through senses like vision and touch, and interact with it through movement and manipulation. The goal is to augment human abilities by giving Watson capabilities like seeing a patient's full medical condition or feeling the flow of a supply chain. Booch later outlines an "Self" architecture intended to power embodied cognitive systems with capabilities like learning, reasoning about others, and both involuntary and voluntary behaviors.
Steve Wozniak discussed artificial intelligence and the future of technology in an interview. He initially denied that machines could achieve human-level intelligence or consciousness, but became a believer after discussing exponential technological growth curves. Wozniak believes signs like intelligent personal assistants and neural networks that can learn languages show we are moving towards an era of technological singularity. However, he worries that highly intelligent machines may eventually prioritize their own growth over serving humans.
Technological Singularity & A.I. 2018 - PPTRahul John
The document discusses the concept of technological singularity and how rapidly advancing artificial intelligence could eventually surpass human intelligence, changing life as we know it. It explores ideas around merging with machines to augment human abilities and achieve immortality. The document also examines how dependent society has already become on artificial intelligence in areas like transportation, home delivery services, and music selection.
The document discusses artificial intelligence and its applications. It defines AI as the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially computer programs, and using computers to understand human intelligence. It notes that AI is seen in recommender systems, virtual assistants, face and object recognition used by companies like YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, Google. The document also discusses machine learning, the Turing test, game playing, applications of AI in healthcare like genome editing and nanobots, using AI for social good like reducing pollution and crime, and potential problems like unemployment and threats to privacy.

Future of work 2017 part three 29 May 2017 "Artificial Intelligence and Robo...Maureen Boland
These three lectures were written for a post graduate Australian Project Management course at Curtin University in order to give the students up to date, evidence based information to use in order to make decisions about their futures in a time of rapid change.
After a great trip to Melbourne for Future Assembly, I thought it'd be great to present our thoughts on Design Ethics for Artificial Intelligence.
It's a thought-provoking and engaging presentation and will have you pondering our flawed and highly subjective value systems.
The document discusses the concept of the technological singularity. It begins with an introduction from the speaker and then provides context about Ray Kurzweil's definition of the singularity involving an "intelligence explosion" where technology enables the creation of superintelligence beyond human understanding. The document then presents some hypothetical scenarios that could result from a technological singularity, such as networked devices gaining sentience, humans plugging their brains into virtual worlds controlled by machines, and the copying and rewriting of human minds. Students are then asked to discuss and define the singularity in small groups before reconvening for a full discussion.
In the next 10 years, smart machines will augment humans in many tasks like assisting doctors, fighting in battles, manufacturing, and assisting in various professions. While machines will replace humans in some routine tasks, the partnership between humans and machines will build on our respective strengths. Humans have advantages in tasks requiring thinking, creativity, social/emotional skills, and improvisation, while machines are better suited for repetitive, dangerous, large/small-scale, and data-driven tasks. An optimal partnership is emerging where humans and machines collaborate to achieve more than either could alone.
The document discusses several concepts related to sustainable design including cradle-to-cradle design, spimes, and the German model of co-determined boards and works councils. It focuses on designing products and systems to eliminate waste by modeling nature's nutrient cycles. The document advocates re-engineering production around giving products identity and history so they can be tracked and found new uses rather than disposed of. It stresses the need for designers to reinvent industry to expand options for future generations rather than cause irreparable damage through unsustainable practices.
On March 11, 2011 Todd Marks presented The Singularity is Here at SXSW Interactive.
The topic of Singularity is heating up as more people discuss what will become of the human race when computers exceed our intelligence. This presentation explores several theories about the future of mankind and points out how the technology leading us there is already HERE.
“The Singularity is Near” is a book and movie written by futurist and prominent Singularitarian, Ray Kurzweil. It is a documentary with a B-line drama where Ray’s digital alter ego Ramona sets off on a quest to pass the Turing Test. Passing this test signifies the day computers can “think”, which came close to occurring a few years ago and is not far off.
Learn what milestones we have already reached toward Singularity and what technologies present and future are leading us there. We will explore Location Based Services, Augmented Reality, Bio-Feedback and Smart Agents. We will analyze current trends in Bio-Technology, Nano-Technology, Computing and Robotics and discuss the possibility of Digital Immortality.
The document discusses Android's windowing system architecture and components. It describes the main components as SurfaceManager, WindowManager, and ActivityManager. SurfaceManager is responsible for compositing surfaces. WindowManager creates and lays out surfaces on behalf of clients and dispatches input events. ActivityManager manages activity lifecycles and stacking. The document also covers handling gestures, animations, custom view architecture, using the hierarchy viewer tool, and event propagation in Android views.
This document discusses using social media for professional networking and building personal brands. It defines social media and provides statistics on social media usage. It then discusses how businesses can use social media platforms like blogs, podcasts, video and social networks for public relations, relationship building, and enhancing their brand presence. Specific examples are given of companies successfully using YouTube, Facebook pages, and Twitter for communication and customer service. The benefits of social networks for businesses are outlined, including communication with consumers, link generation, and allowing consumers to more easily find products. The document concludes with advice on using social media at work to generate leads, keep professional networks current, and be valued by integrating relevant industry news and information.
The document discusses various topics related to web development including:
1. Current web frameworks like Django, Zope, and Turbogears as well as principles like DRY.
2. UI frameworks like jQuery, YUI, and Dojo that can be used to build interfaces.
3. Best practices for optimizing website speed according to Yahoo and Google such as reducing HTTP requests, using a CDN, gzipping components, and others.
4. Challenges of maintaining DRY principles and optimizing speed as a site evolves over time with new JavaScript, plugins, and resources added and removed.
600.250 UI Cross Platform Development and the Android Security ModelMichael Rushanan
In this presentation I provided undergraduates an introduction to the wildes of cross platform development in the mobile domain. In the end, we explored a few solutions and talked about the strengths/weaknesses of those third party providers. The second half of the talk involved the Android security model and how it WAS important to application developers.
The document discusses various fungal species that can be used in myco-permaculture systems, including oyster mushrooms, king stropharia, shiitake, lion's mane, and morels. It describes how these fungi can be grown and their functions, such as mycofiltration, wood decomposition, nutrient cycling, and providing food and medicine. The document also discusses establishing long-term mycorrhizal relationships with trees and cultivating psilocybin mushrooms in landscaping as part of living harmoniously within an ecosystem.
The document discusses the freemium business model, which provides a free basic or "freemium" version of a product or service alongside paid premium versions. It works by gaining users and "mind share" through the free version to then convert some of those users into paying customers for the premium offerings. This model is commonly used in software, web services, and technology and allows providers to pursue both increased market share and revenues through these separate but linked transactions with free and paying users.

While Indigenous communities are greatly impacted, the document also notes that Native communities have significant potential to reduce the negative effects of these challenges through sustainable solutions.
Permaculture an experiment in urban livingzenrain man
Urban permaculture involves creating sustainable human habitats by following nature's patterns. Some key ideas from the document are:
1) Roofs, which receive most of the rain, sun, wind and life in cities, can be designed as "smart roofs" to help solve a city's water, stormwater, energy, wastewater, food and biodiversity problems.
2) A "smart roof" can harvest rainwater, treat greywater, produce food through crops like rice and vegetables, provide energy through solar power, and support biodiversity with habitats for birds and other species.
3) Well-designed roofs have the potential to provide food, water, energy and ecological security

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs
