Dr. Eric Stelnicki performed the second virtual surgical planning (VSP) guided jaw surgery in Florida for a patient with craniofacial microsomia, a condition causing facial asymmetry. VSP involves using computer modeling of a patient's anatomy to precisely plan surgery and create customized plates and guides. This allows for more accurate reconstruction of the jaw to correct deformities. The surgery successfully used these customized VSP tools to reshape the patient's crooked jaw and face caused by craniofacial microsomia.
The document discusses the digital era in the design and manufacturing of orthodontic appliances. It outlines how technological advances have led to computational tools for designing fixed orthodontic appliances digitally. The authors aim to illustrate appliances they have digitally designed and manufactured, such as a Hyrax appliance, palatal expanders with mini screws, and Nance space maintainers. The benefits of digital design and manufacturing include producing customized appliances with perfect fit and adjustment, decreasing time for both patients and clinicians, and limiting incidents like breakages.
This document discusses the use of robots in orthopaedic surgery. It describes how robotic systems can improve accuracy of bone cuts and component placement compared to manual surgery. Both autonomous and haptic robotic systems are presented. Applications discussed include unicondylar knee replacement using the Mako robotic arm and spinal pedicle screw placement using the Renaissance system. While robotic surgery may provide benefits like increased accuracy, it also has drawbacks such as high costs and long-term outcomes have not proven superiority over manual techniques.

Cervical and spinal orthoses are braces that immobilize and protect the neck and spine from injuries, fractures, or after surgery. They work by limiting pain during movement and maintaining the normal spinal curve. Common types include HALO braces, TLSO, LSO, CTO, and CTLSO. Cervical and spinal orthoses benefit those with neck or back strains, disc issues, or spinal abnormalities by providing support, absorbing shocks, and restricting excessive movement.
Orthopedics is the medical specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves and allows you to move, work, and be active.

He specializes in spine surgery, joint replacement, and trauma surgery. He has performed over 3,600 surgeries. Additionally, he founded "Operation Straight Spine", a philanthropic organization that has provided spinal surgeries and care for over 150 underprivileged children and adults in India.
The document discusses bone grafts, which are used to aid in healing and strengthening bones. There are several types of bone grafts, including autografts which use bone from the patient's own body, and allografts which use donated bone. Alternatives to bone grafts have also been developed, including substitutes made from ceramics, coral, or synthetic materials. The best type of bone graft depends on each patient's individual surgical situation and needs.
Total Hip Replacement Implant Designing and its Computational Analysis using ...IRJET Journal
This document discusses the design and computational analysis of a total hip replacement implant using finite element analysis (FEA). Researchers designed a patient-specific implant based on CT scans of femur bones. They used Mimics software to extract 3D models of femurs from CT data and measure dimensions. AutoCAD was used to design the implant based on the dimensions. FEA was performed using ANSYS on implant designs made of different materials to analyze mechanical strength and stability. Models with and without pores were analyzed to study how pores may improve osseointegration. The goal is to create implants tailored to individual patients' anatomy to increase compatibility and implant life.
disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s movement , sense or activities.
It is an important public health problem especially in developing countries like India . Any form of disability cannot be fully restored but measures and efforts can be put in to improve the conditions.
prosthetic devices are an artificial device that replaces a missing body part which may be lost through trauma, diseases or congenital conditions.
Purpose- used to replace a missing limb to perform functional tasks.
The importance of Rehabilitation explains about the trends in development of prosthetic and orthotic devices and how, the technology can be used to improve the current devices in the market. Devices for mobility, Devices for visual impairment and hearing impairment and its uses are explained.
- Researchers at BIDMC found that younger women (ages 18-45) who fractured their wrists may have weaker bones and be predisposed to fractures later in life. Using CT scans, they found thinner and more spaced out trabeculae (connective structures within bones) in women with fractures compared to those without fractures.
- This suggests some women may show early signs of skeletal fragility through fractures at a younger age, even before typical osteoporosis diagnoses in older populations. Identifying factors for increased fracture risk could help guide prevention strategies.
The document discusses spinal surgeries performed at Shonan Fujisawa Tokushukai Hospital in Japan using the Artis zeego robotic imaging system. [1] The hospital has a hybrid operating room dedicated to spine and scoliosis surgery equipped with Artis zeego, an operating table, and navigation system. [2] Surgeries discussed include cervical, thoracic, lumbar spine procedures as well as scoliosis corrections using dorsal and lateral approaches. [3] Intraoperative CT-like imaging from Artis zeego and navigation guidance enable precise screw placement and correction of misplaced screws.
Anthropometric data and body mass index (BMI) calculations are important for bilateral lower-limb amputees. A BMI calculator tool allows users to enter height and weight to calculate BMI based on amputation level. For those with two leg amputations, a graduated approach to prosthetic training is most effective, starting with short "stubbies" that focus on balance and mobility without knees or long pylons before progressing to full leg prosthetics.
The Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) has granted their Seal of Approval to the Bio-Back Lumbar Orthosis, a patented back brace created by Medolutions, LLC to help relieve back pain and restore mobility. COCSA Vice President Dr. Kate Rufolo praised the Bio-Back for improving chiropractic treatment and benefiting patients. Medolutions was founded in 2007 to develop pain relief products using a patented bilateral opposing forces design, and their initial product is the Bio-Back brace.
This document discusses recent developments in orthotic devices for physiotherapy. It describes three devices:
1) SOPHIA, a soft robotic exoskeleton with a brain-machine interface and sensorized glove that aids in hand extension rehabilitation exercises.
2) A voice-controlled hand orthosis prototype to help with stroke rehabilitation.
3) A 3D printed mesh arm orthosis with an integrated ultrasound therapy system, which was found to accelerate healing and reduce orthosis wearing time.

With today’s modern advancements in the science of pros-
thetic making such as CADCAM (Computer Assisted Design
and Technology) and VACUUM Assisted Suspension (a more
advanced option than older pin suspension technology, to
achieve a better fitting socket on lower extremity amputee
prosthetics), Brooke is able to assist the amputee with artificial
limbs that fit and perform better for every patient. Another
cutting-edge device Brooke routinely uses is the Omega Scan-
ner. When an amputee comes in to be fitted with a prosthetic
limb, Brooke scans the patient’s limb with the Omega’s LED
Light Technology and that information is immediately trans-
ferred to her computer’s hard drive. Once the scanning proce-
dure is completed, a 3 dimensional digital model of her
patient’s limb appears on the computer screen that allows
Brooke to modify as needed, to create a more precisely func-
tional prosthesis. Scanner technology is faster, as the procedure
takes just minutes and is a preferred method, as compared to
the old-fashioned technique of plaster mold-casting. “Patients
love it because scanning is fast, so it saves time, and fewer prac-
titioner fittings are required to
achieve superior results. Scanning
affords a quicker turn-around from
scanned model to a completed pros-
thetic,” says Brooke.

Brooke Artesi, CP, LPO
Originally a Fine Arts Major
with a specialty in sculpt-
ing, Brooke went on to earn
her Biology Degree at Rut-
gers. With an eye for design
and understanding of sci-
ence, she completed her
Post-Graduate work at the
University of Hartford for
the Newington Certificate
Program in Orthotics and
Prosthetics (NCP). Working
in the field of Prosthetics
and Orthotics for more than 10 years, Brooke has established
Sunshine Prosthetics + Orthotics, her new private practice in
Wayne, NJ. Brooke is licensed by the NJ Board of Orthotics and
Prosthetics and Certified in Prosthetics by the American Board for
Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics (ABC).
Cranial Remolding for pediatric patients who are 3-18
months of age and who present with skull deformities such as
plagiocephaly; an asymmetrical distortion, or flattening of one
side of the skull, is accomplished with the Custom Fitted Cra-
nial Remolding Helmet. Brooke utilizes the Omega Scanner
to obtain a digital model of the patient’s head and works with
STARband products.
Ankle Foot Orthoses are custom fitted and are used to cor-
rect musculoskeletal deformities and abnormalities in pediatric
gait. Custom Fitted Ankle/Foot Orthotics allows movement
where the patient has functional control and provides support
where the patient has weakness or dysfunction. Brooke utilizes
the Omega Scanner with her pediatric gait patients as well, to
quickly obtain a model of the patient’s ankle/foot and works
with Dafo products.
Functional Electric Stimulation…Help for Patients with Mus-
cular Atrophy
Another superior technological advance is FES, the Func-
tional Electric Stimulation unit. It stimulates nerves and mus-
cles to give patients more natural movement and stability, and
is used for patients who are suffering from Drop Foot. The FES
Hand Unit is widely used for patients who have suffered a
Stroke, for Multiple Sclerosis Patients, those with Cerebral
Palsy and Brain or Spinal Cord Injured patients. FES re-edu-
cates muscles, thereby reducing muscle loss. It also increases
blood circulation to the localized area, and maintains and im-
proves a range of motion.
If you or a loved one has trouble walking or using your
hand as a result of Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Injury,
Spinal Cord Injury or Cerebral Palsy, BIONESS wireless tech-
nologies may help you regain your independence and become
active again. Sunshine Prosthetics + Orthotics will help you
find out if a BIONESS System is right for you. FREE Screen-
ings are available once each month by appointment only.
