DIVORCE
A divorce is a legal action between married people to terminate their
marriage relationship. It can be referred to as dissolution of marriage
and is basically, the legal action that ends the marriage before the
death of either spouse.
WHY DIVORCE
The young couples are fast becoming upwardly mobile and rich in
Indian cities. But economic prosperity is taking its toll on the marital
status and marriages are falling apart. Over the years the number of
divorce cases filed in the family courts have doubled. It is seen that
most of the couples filing a divorce petition in the family courts are
working professionals in the age group of 25-35 years. The main
reasons are ego, stress to professional competition.
Numbers rolling forward
• 11,667 cases of divorce were filed in Mumbai in 2014 (till nov 30), up
from 5,245 cases in 2010
• About 2,000 cases were filed in the lucknow family court in 2014 . Of
these, about 900 were filed by young couples married less then a
year. In 2009, the no. of cases filed by young couples married less
then a year was 300.
• 8,347 cases were filed in Kolkata in 2014 (till nov 30), a 350% increase
from the 2,388 cases filed in 2003.
• THREE more FAMILY COURTS were opened in Bengaluru in 2013, to
cater to the growing demand, taking the total no. of such courts to

REASONS FOR DIVORCE
While for many, marriage is the beginning of a whole new life, for some
it's the end of the road and that's because Indians are no more the
patient lot they used to be, when marriages were made in heaven.
The divorce rate in India has risen to 13 per 1,000 from a mere 1 in
1,000 some ten years ago and probability of witnessing a bigger figure
next year is almost certain. But, has anyone of us even bothered to
find out what's leading to so many broken marriages?Dr. Nisha Khanna,
a leading psychologist, marriage counselor and a relationship expert
told some bizarre reasons to TOI.

BIZARRE REASONS
• I hate my wife's appearance
the most common reason for men filing for divorce is the fact that they
dislike their partner's appearance. And, if you thought this was only
common to men who've had arranged marriages, be ready to be
shocked because men who have married as per their will are leading
this pack of unsatisfied husbands. Is this the metrosexual effect, uh?
• My mom-in-law gifted me artificial jewellery, I feel cheated!
Yes, some Indian bahus are walking out of their marriages because of
being duped by their vicious mom-in-laws, who promised them gold
but couldn't keep the promise
TOI | Ankita Shukla | Jan 4, 2016
• I was asked to touch my husband's feet on Karva Chauth, I'm appalled
• My husband is not presentable
• I was living in a bigger house before!

• Rapid change in society
• Pressure to marry
• Work problem
• Poor communication
• Infidelity
• No more trust
• Drinking or drug abuse
• Physical or mental abuse
• Money problem
• Incompatible
WHY SO CASUAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS DIVORCE
• Divorce no longer a social taboo
• Greater societal acceptance
• The anonymity of big cities
• Financial freedom
• The sanctity of marriage is taking a beating.
• More DINKS couples (double income no kids)
• Stress of modern life.
• Loneliness.
• Change in gender roles.
• Movies

We are becoming emotionally unstable, thanks to the expectations of
the society, stress and other factors. "People have unrealistic
expectations these days and things go wrong when you walk into a
marriage expecting it to be a fairy tale, because it isn't going to be one,“
you have to learn to adjust and have to develop better understanding
for each other if you want to see a better tomorrow for your kids with
some family values.
