FROM BURNOUT TO BURN-IN

The roots of low self efficacy for math
The study examined the causes of low self-efficacy for math among historically low-performing 7th grade students at an urban middle school. Through interviews and observations of 20 students, the researchers identified four main factors that influence self-efficacy: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological states. Recurring failure in math, comparisons to higher-achieving peers and siblings, unsupportive feedback, and anxiety all contributed to low self-efficacy. The findings imply math instruction should focus on building mastery, while the classroom environment and teacher practices aim to motivate students and provide awareness of low self-efficacy.
