Discussion: Social Work Competence
The term competence connotes a level of preparedness for addressing issues and maintaining a high standard of practice with clients. Competent social workers have completed adequate preparations for licensure, and they are appropriately credentialed. They adhere to ethical practices by maintaining professional boundaries and honoring commitments to confidentiality. How might you demonstrate your competence as a social worker? How can you recognize competence in other social workers?

Discussion: Strengths-Based Perspective
Simply put, a social worker with a “strengths-based perspective” emphasizes client strengths as a starting point in addressing challenges. This perspective relies on the notion that every client has strengths that can be leveraged to create productive change and progress toward achievement of goals. Client strengths can include a variety of attributes, from complex professional skill sets or well-developed emotional intelligence to mobility, literacy, or good health.
For this Discussion, think about your family of origin. Consider the strengths particular to your family of origin. Imagine how those strengths might play a part in helping your family to overcome a challenging situation.
Post by Day 4 a description of at least three strengths that you can identify within your family. Describe how the strengths might support a strengths-based plan to meet a challenge.

Discussion 1: Engaging and Assessing Across Levels of Social Work Practice
Maintaining the perspective that people are in constant interaction with their environment and the social systems therein (the Person in Environment perspective) is a key concept in the field of social work. Social work recognizes that the concerns or problems individuals face might be due to many causes. This view also supports another goal of social work which is to empower clients who are marginalized and oppressed to collaborate in the resolution of their problems or concerns as experts of their life experiences. As such, looking at a problem and assessing the needs of individuals depends on a review of the challenges they have encountered on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Assessing the situation on all three levels will provide a holistic map for goal planning. For example, you might assess a client’s individual strengths and challenges, the support or lack of.

Discussion 1: Treatment Evaluation
Many social work students dread taking research classes. They often view the courses as unnecessary to be a good social worker when, in fact, the opposite is true. How do you really know that your interventions are working, unless you evaluate them? As a social worker it is essential to identify in a quantifiable manner whether a treatment is helping the client or if it needs to be abandoned for another approach. In the past, social workers depended on recognizing a client’s progress through their own observations. Today, with a significant push both in the field of social work and among insurance companies to provide evidenced-based practice, social workers now are expected, more than ever, to evaluate their practice. Selecting the proper measurement/evaluation tool, based on the clients’ presenting concerns and treatment goals, will provide the evidence-based practice that is expected by the field.
For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources, including the course-specific case studies. Select either Abdel or Pedro from the course-specific case studies provided and search the Mental Measures Yearbook database to identify potential scales that could be used to evaluate the treatment. Select one of the scales you identified and consider why it might be useful in evaluating treatment. Finally, think about the validity and reliability of that scale.
Note: The course-specific case study you select should differ from the case study you selected in Week 6.

Discussion 2: Management of Planned and Unplanned Termination
Ending a client relationship can be just as difficult as ending a personal relationship. In fact, while much of the literature addresses when to terminate, a more significant topic is the feelings that surround termination. Depending on the client and the length of treatment, saying goodbye can be hard for both of you. As a result, you should prepare for termination and the feelings surrounding this step of the GIM process early in the client-social worker relationship.
While you generally anticipate that successful treatment will lead to the eventual termination of the client relationship, there are a variety of other reasons for why this relationship might come to an end. There might be a set number of sessions the client’s insurance will allow, or maybe the end of your intern.

The characteristics of program design and evaluationare intended to provide some level of recommended change or action as a result of the systematic investigation into a program’s effectiveness. Evaluation can provide answers to questions about a program that may be useful in adjusting a program to become more effective. Because evaluation results in insight about the effectiveness of a program for a specific population, evaluation can be used to implement social change or action. Evaluation findings may assist stakeholders (those who hold an interest) or decision makers in go/no-go decisions about specific program modifications or initiate the continuation or demise of the entire program. Today, social policy and public administrative movement are closely associated with social program outcomes and effective evaluations.
This week, you present your design for a program addressing the needs of the homeless population in your community and analyze how your program may effect social change. You also evaluate your potential to impact areas of human services delivery and assess the benefits of participating in professional human services organizations.

Why is it important for social workers to understand policy? When you think of policies, you may tend to think of the federal policies that support services such as Medicare and state policies that support education and welfare services. However, sometimes the policies that have the greatest impact on clients are the policies of agencies and organizations.
Note
: An "agency or organizational policy" is a policy. For example, it might be part of a county welfare agency that requires an administrator at a juvenile correction facility to report any individual that is an illegal immigrant that comes to that facility.

Regardless of the career that you pursue or are currently pursuing, it is likely that the action of securing the resource of friends and professional acquaintances will be as valuable as any other action you could take.
Part 1:
First, take some time to reflect on your career and/or future career. If this includes more than one career path, then focus on the one that you are most concerned with in the long term. This might include working in a specific field, starting a business, or any other pursuit you are currently working on or plan to work on in the future. The choice behind the pursuit you will focus on is a personal choice.
Write two pages on why this particular career and/or pursuit is your choice. Reflecting on the why behind your wish to achieve a goal will help to make it feel more tangible to you. This exercise of reflection should serve to remind you of your motivation and will be a good thing to refer back to if your motivation ever gets low. The "why" behind a pursuit is oftentimes more important than the "how" of a pursuit. If you have a strong enough "why," you will find the "how."
Part 2:
For the second part of this assignment, make a list of the types of people that could help you in your career and why those people would be good contacts to have. This list should be general in nature, meaning you should list professions or names of positions within companies rather than specific names.
You should list general fields or positions like accountants, attorneys, marketing managers, CEOs, etc., rather than any specific names. Be sure to list at least five professions or types of people.

Competing on Social Purpose
a) Summary and Analysis
The article discusses the recent trend of business attempting to pick up social purposes to associate with their business to promote profit, sales or other functional benefits. This is because there is a shift of customer preference on the brands they wish to associate themselves with. The article establishes that the business models that had a social purpose initially incorporated into their businesses show a steady growth rate and do not face the challenges of competing on social purpose. Such companies include TOMS, Warby Parker, and Patagonia.
The challenges of competing on social purpose tackled in this article are mostly encountered by businesses that are trying to develop social purpose strategies after running for a while without any. The article defines three fields in which managers should focus on to create effective social purpose strategies which include:
· Brand heritage – This revolves around the merger of the companies’ principal product/ service’s features and the nature of the social purpose strategy. The more compatible they are, the easier it is to come up with an effective social purpose strategy.
· Customer tensions – This revolves around active knowledge of the social tensions facing the target market.
· Product externalities – This revolves around active knowledge of the indirect costs or benefits that are linked to the company’s product/ service. This is more likely to affect companies dependent on 3rd party interactions.
b) Critical Thinking
Studies have established that the modern day consumer is more likely to associate themselves with and/or buy products from companies that have a defined social purpose that addresses societal tensions or public issues. This speaks to the shift in consumer trends in which is directly linked to their psychology. For this purpose, it is integral for managers to focus on a few characteristics of purpose-driven growth. Firstly, it is important for managers to understand that once a social-purpose association to a brand is established, it is misguided to change/ shift course. This connection is important the consumers to the extent that sudden shifts in social purpose strategies could challenge consumer loyalty. Thus it is important to select the appropriate strategy.
Another element to keep in consideration is that whilst there is a significant shift in consumer trends, there is no certain way to assess market potential and benefits. Companies that have successfully employed social-purpose strategies have illustrated growth whilst the companies that have failed to apply appropriate strategies have faced persecutions on social media and recorded drops in consumer rates, however, these do not establish definitive data. Most data on the success/ failure of social-purpose are collected through consumer surveys rather than customer behavior effectively making them less credible.

Part 1:
First, take some time to reflect on your career and/or future career. If this includes more than one career path, then focus on the one that you are most concerned with in the long term. This might include working in a specific field, starting a business, or any other pursuit you are currently working on or plan to work on in the future. The choice behind the pursuit you will focus on is a personal choice.
Write two pages on why this particular career and/or pursuit is your choice. Reflecting on the why behind your wish to achieve a goal will help to make it feel more tangible to you. This exercise of reflection should serve to remind you of your motivation and will be a good thing to refer back to if your motivation ever gets low. The "why" behind a pursuit is oftentimes more important than the "how" of a pursuit. If you have a strong enough "why," you will find the "how."
Part 2:
For the second part of this assignment, make a list of the types of people that could help you in your career and why those people would be good contacts to have. This list should be general in nature, meaning you should list professions or names of positions within companies rather than specific names.

Competing on Social Purpose
a) Summary and Analysis
The article discusses the recent trend of business attempting to pick up social purposes to associate with their business to promote profit, sales or other functional benefits. This is because there is a shift of customer preference on the brands they wish to associate themselves with. The article establishes that the business models that had a social purpose initially incorporated into their businesses show a steady growth rate and do not face the challenges of competing on social purpose. Such companies include TOMS, Warby Parker, and Patagonia.
The challenges of competing on social purpose tackled in this article are mostly encountered by businesses that are trying to develop social purpose strategies after running for a while without any. The article defines three fields in which managers should focus on to create effective social purpose strategies which include:
· Brand heritage – This revolves around the merger of the companies’ principal product/ service’s features and the nature of the social purpose strategy. The more compatible they are, the easier it is to come up with an effective social purpose strategy.
· Customer tensions – This revolves around active knowledge of the social tensions facing the target market.
· Product externalities – This revolves around active knowledge of the indirect costs or benefits that are linked to the company’s product/ service. This is more likely to affect companies dependent on 3rd party interactions.
b) Critical Thinking
Studies have established that the modern day consumer is more likely to associate themselves with and/or buy products from companies that have a defined social purpose that addresses societal tensions or public issues. This speaks to the shift in consumer trends in which is directly linked to their psychology. For this purpose, it is integral for managers to focus on a few characteristics of purpose-driven growth. Firstly, it is important for managers to understand that once a social-purpose association to a brand is established, it is misguided to change/ shift course. This connection is important the consumers to the extent that sudden shifts in social purpose strategies could challenge consumer loyalty. Thus it is important to select the appropriate strategy.
Another element to keep in consideration is that whilst there is a significant shift in consumer trends, there is no certain way to assess market potential and benefits. Companies that have successfully employed social-purpose strategies have illustrated growth whilst the companies that have failed to apply appropriate strategies have faced persecutions on social media and recorded drops in consumer rates, however, these do not establish definitive data. Most data on the success/ failure of social-purpose are collected through consumer surveys rather than customer behavior effectively making them less credible.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

Discussion 2: Engaging Mandatory and Involuntary Clients
You walk into the waiting room to greet a client for the first
time and the client begins yelling at you, “I have done nothing
wrong. I do NOT need to be here”. How might you react to this
behavior? During the intake session, the client exhibits classic
signs of defensiveness and disengagement, such as eye-contact
avoidance and folded arms across the chest. Working with
clients who have not chosen to come to you for your services
can be challenging at times. How might this behavior impact
your feelings about this client? It likely could evoke your own
sense of anxiety, frustration, or even anger. What steps would
4. you take to engage the client? Recognizing that the interaction
is not truly about you will help you maintain a professional and
calm demeanor, even when you begin to feel your own emotions
rise. Many social workers engage with mandated or involuntary
clients—for example in child protective service agencies,
correctional institutions, and sometimes psychiatric facilities.
Treating these clients with respect and attending to their
concerns will demonstrate your desire to assist them.
Furthermore, verbalizing that you understand that they are there
against their will can begin a conversation about how they got
there in the first place. In these situations, an additional dose of
empathy, warmth, and genuineness will help you understand the
client’s position and exemplify your desire to help.

Discussion: Planning and Implementing Treatment Goals with
Clients
You are a social worker at an out-patient mental health facility.
Your new client presents with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder
and noncompliance with her medications. To deal with the mood
swings, she has been abusing painkillers and alcohol daily.
Currently homeless, she has been sleeping on her friends’
5. couches. Her boyfriend is emotionally and verbally abusive and
has just taken her last twenty dollars. She works at a local gas
station, but she has to depend on friends for rides to work. As a
result, she missed several work shifts. Her boss, who was
understanding until now, recently told her she could not miss
any more days, due to a lack of transportation. There are many
short, intermediate, and long-term problems the client could
address in this scenario. How do you choose which problem to
tackle first?
One trap for social workers is thinking that they know which
problem or concern should take priority and what is best for the
client. Rather, what the client feels is the priority is what
should take precedence. In this scenario, how would you start
the GIM planning process with the client? As her social worker,
you might feel that going into drug and alcohol rehab is a
priority. However, she might feel that keeping her job, and
therefore getting a car, is much more of a priority. If you
disregard her goals and instead refer her to an inpatient rehab
program, how successful will she be at completing that goal?

and consider how the social worker applied the GIM in the case
study. Also, think about any cultural competence techniques the
social worker might have explicitly or implicitly used in the
case. Then reflect on why working collaboratively with that
client is vital to the treatment planning process. Then, select
three of the eight planning steps discussed in the course text
and think about how you might utilize those planning steps to
foster empowerment during that process. Finally, reflect on the
skills you might use to ensure the treatment planning process is
mutually agreed upon by you and the client and consider how
the treatment planning process affects implementation of
treatment.
