It discusses 5 essential elements: intrinsic motivation from perceiving discussions as valuable; real-life connections; clear guidelines; instructor presence; and quality questions/responses. Additional best practices include creating a conducive learning environment, establishing rules, stimulating participation, encouraging reflection, and ensuring discussions have introductions, goal setting, general discussions, peer feedback, and self-evaluation. Effective boards are open, efficient, collaborative, and ensure student safety.
