Knowledge is important to support the development and
prosperity for our nation. The era of k-economy requires a
borderless access facilities for vast knowledge repositories
at anytime, anywhere. Towards national transformation to
develop the Malaysian knowledge based inclusive society,
information delivery services are significant to contribute
the use and generation of knowledge resources, thus
cultivates the life long learning experience for the
continuity of life and work quality enhancement.

THE BEGINNING

Ubiquitous availability of knowledge is crucial to the development of a
nation and the role of u-Pustaka in envisioning ubiquitous lifelong
learning services as digital lifestyle in the context of development,
connected communities as well as competitiveness is vital for
transformation in a knowledge-based economy. u-Pustaka initiative was
inspired by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission
(MCMC) with the support from Ministry of Communication and
Multimedia Malaysia as an innovation developed through the
collaborative synergy of 18 agencies with four (4) government agencies,
eight (8) library institutions and six (6) strategic partners which reflected
a collaborative synergy of 8 libraries as Information Service Providers
(ISPs) and 10 strategic partners.
u-Pustaka is a knowledge gateway that unlocks knowledge resources
anytime, anywhere for connected communities to serve the whole nation
with a whole gamut of ubiquitous lifelong learning services with features
and functionalities in Web Publishing, Content Management,
Collaboration and Inter-lending Services. Pivoted on a model of seven (7)
components, that include broadband as the underpinning layer, u-
Pustaka blends the convergence of Web Services, Integration of Z39.50
for Information Retrieval Service Protocol, RFID technology that uses
ultra high frequency (UHF) spectrum at kiosk, bookdrop, counter station
and gantry, Gateway to Doorstep Delivery Service, Gateway to Electronic
Payment, and Gateway to the Nation’s Knowledge Repository.

9. u-Pustaka Services was inspired by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC) with the support from Ministry of Communication and
Multimedia Malaysia (formerly known as Ministry of Information, Communication
and Culture) and MAMPU with EPU both from the Prime Minister’s Department, as
an innovation developed through the collaborative synergy of 18 agencies - eight (8)
u- Pustaka consortium members namely the National Library of Malaysia, Selangor
State Library Corporation, Negeri Sembilan State Library Corporation, Pahang State
Library Corporation, Sarawak State Library, Kuala Lumpur Library, INTAN Bukit Kiara
Library & Sabah State Library. This is strengthened with the involvement from the
smart partners namely National Registration Department, National Centre of
Excellence for Sensor Technology, Pos Malysia Berhad, MyClear, Bank Islam (M) Bhd.
and Touch ‘n Go. With four (4) government agencies, eight (8) library institutions and
six (6) strategic partners; u-Pustaka is a knowledge gateway that unlocks knowledge
