- Folding manual disappearing stairways can be installed in various types of ceiling assemblies. Another benefit to a disappearing stairway is that they can be used with a truss ceiling or a drop ceiling.
- If your ceiling is at 10’ and your roof deck is at 18’ you can get a disappearing stairway with a deep angle frame and your climber could continue climbing at the same angle all the way up.
- A disappearing stairway can come with a fire-rating or non-rated. They can provide access to a roof with a hatch, as seen in the drawing here. This can be shipped as a complete assembly. Roof hatch and disappearing stairway are ready to install into an opening. They can also provide access to an attic, or access through the ceiling to another level, this includes fire-rated ceilings. So, if you have a fire-rated ceiling or roof you can get a fire-rated disappearing stairway unit.
- There are three different types of frames used with a disappearing stairway, they include box, deep box and deep angle. This standard steel box frame drawing in the bottom right is typical in residential use. The person climbing the stairway feels comfortable climbing up and stepping into the attic space. In a commercial setting the most admirable is the angle frame, see in the drawing on the top right. The angle is the same as the stairway itself, to make for an easy transition to whatever you are accessing.
- With these photos you can see that your climber would be leaning forward at a 63 degree angle the entire accent of the climb and could easily transition to surface above. A deep angle frame allows the climber to continue climbing at the same angle the entire accent. So when the space is available this is the best choice. You can see in the picture to the far right, this particular model has the larger flange around it for hatch access.
- The Applicable Code for Disappearing Stairways that we are going to look at is ANSI A14.9. ANSI A14.9 calls out disappearing stairways 7’ to 12’ any higher isn’t addressed. The manual and automatic disappearing stairways shown in the following pictures have a maximum height of 13’6”. A semi-automatic disappearing, which means the door opens automatically but the stairs must be folded down and up manually maxes out at 16’.
- ANSI A14.9 cover both residential and commercial disappearing stairways. The minimum tread depth for a residential disappearing stairway is 3 inches, and for commercial stairway the minimum tread depth is 5 inches.
- The minimum tread width for residential is 11 inches and for commercial is 15 inches. For a disappearing stairway 7 feet to 12 feet, the standard step is 18” wide. From 12’1” to 13’6”, the average tread width is 12 inches wide.
- The Load Rating is 200-350 pounds residential and 500 pounds commercial. This is not your typical disappearing stairway that you would find at your local home improvement warehouse, this unit right here has a minimum load rating of 500 pounds, and could probably hold more. The benefits of a commercial stairway is the bigger tread depths, longer tread width and the better load rating so you are not going to be climbing up the scary creaking stairway to your attic.
- Angle: All disappearing climbing devices must be 66° or less from the horizontal. Very safe angle of climb for your climber.
