Disadvantages of Portfolio Assessment Explanation Suggestions
Requiring extra time to plan an assessment
system and conduct the assessment.
Portfolio assessment is a systematic and
deliberate management system and in order for
this to be conducted is not easy. It will kill your
time in planning on what is to put in the portfolio
and the gathering of all necessary data for the
portfolio. Moreover, because of its characteristic
that it is continuous and on-going, you will not
stop in monitoring your students about their
portfolio until there are done with the task.
To overcome this certain disadvantage of
portfolio assessment, the teacher’s assessment
system should be well thought of and the
conduct of the assessment must be well
planned before it will be implemented, the goals
are clear and the protocols should be well
established in order for the teacher’s time not to
be wasted all along the implementation of this
assessment.
Gathering all of the necessary data and work
samples can make portfolios bulky and difficult to
manage.
In having Portfolio Assessment requires a lot of
necessary data because you need to monitor
the progress of your student learning and this
means that you need data from the diagnostic
until to the last part of the course. So you are to
manage with a big number of
requirements/outputs and difficulty in keeping
these requirements/outputs.
To address this disadvantage, The teacher
should just collect the important or necessary
requirements or in this matter, the best work of
the students. The best work will still let the
teacher see the progress in the performance of
the students even if not collecting all the
artefacts from the beginning of the
course/grading period.
Developing a systematic and deliberate
management system is difficult, but this step is
necessary in order to make portfolios more than a
random collection of student work.
Yes, it is difficult to manage a deliberative and
develop a systematic portfolio assessment. It is
because the fairness of assessment is at stake
in this matter and of utmost important. So that,
the students will be able to answer and realize
the common “mysterious grade” among
students.
In suggestion of this disadvantage, the teacher
should have just a simple system, easy to
manage and can be done even in a time
constraint. So, the teacher should have a
system that she con work with and not just by
merely adopting standardized system but the
teacher may also modify other system.
