Please read Chapters 12and 13 and look carefully at the illustrations. Please note that there was a significant difference between the art of Northern Europe and Southern Europe during this time. The term Renaissance means a renewal or a rebirth--in this context of the styles and ideas of the Greek and Roman (Classical) past. While both areas continued to use Christian themes, the style, or the manner in which the images are put together and presented to the viewer, differed substantially from North to South. The North continued to be quite medieval or Gothic in styles, while the South (chiefly Italy), relied heavily on its Classical (Greek and Roman) past. During this period, you will see that the human figure, especially the nude, in an echo of the Classical past, appears again in Italy. The North will come to admire and to use the nude only with Albrecht Duerer, a major German artist of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. He will be the first Northern artist to participate in the developing humanist and classical interests of Italy. It is with this artist that the North enters into the "spirit" and the subject matter of the Italian form of the Renaissance.

Sometimes the styles or labels of the categories of art will become blurred, making absolutes difficult to determine. The term Renaissance means a renewal or a rebirth--in this context of the styles and ideas of the Greek and Roman (Classical) past. While both areas continued to use Christian themes, the style, or the manner in which the images are put together and presented to the viewer, differed substantially from North to South. The North continued to be quite medieval or Gothic in styles, while the South (chiefly Italy), relied heavily on its Classical (Greek and Roman) past. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Pablo Picasso has been called one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art by The Museum of Modern Art in a 2004 publication1 and the most influential work of art of the last 100 years in a 2007 article in Newsweek.2 Picasso created the work in 1907, the modern era. Determining the proper culture is difficult. He is considered a Spanish painter. There are clear Iberian and African influences presented in the painting. He painted it in Paris. The title references a brothel in Barcelona, Spain. So, for the most consistent classification, Spanish culture seems to be the most fitting.
That said, this work is less about the cultural ties to that place, and more about someone reaching for a new direction in art. The social/psychological reference within the work has been interpreted by William Rubin in his book dedicated to the work as reflecting his deep-seated fear and loathing of the female body, which existed side by side with his craving for and ecstatic idealization of it.3 If this is true, then the way the figures are distorted would certainly support that idea. However, for two reasons this work is more than just a social comment from Picasso or a psychological manifestation of his attitude toward women and more one of development of a personal, and possibly intentional new style of presenting subject matter. The early rivalry between Matisse and Picasso is well documented. It has been suggested that Matisse's Bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) became a challenge for Picasso's creation of Les Damoiselles d'Avignon.4 The two seemed to be competing for who would be the leader in the pursuit of Modern Art. If this work were the last one by Picasso, it may not have had the lasting impact on the world of art that it enjoys. But in his subsequent work, and others, the fragmentation and representation of subject matter in planes that defy nature began with this work. It is a new aesthetic approach that forced the viewer at that time to reconsider many aspects of what art is and how space can be redefined.
On one hand the subject matter could be viewed as a personal comment on brothels in general, but because it is clear that Picasso was in search for a new direction in modern art, it is clear that his main purpose was to influence the world of art with this new way of presenting subject matter.

If you have never seen Baroque art before, above is a great introduction into how it came about and what defines it. In short, Baroque art is dramatic, theatrical, ornate, sophisticated, and emotional. It originated when the Catholic Church wanted to draw people away from Protestantism by giving them a taste of the glory and grandeur of heaven or to remind of the drama and power of the Christian story. Despite its Catholic origins, Protestants would adopt many Baroque techniques for their own ends, and later Kings would use the style to portray their own splendor.

This Assignment has two parts. You will construct an argument in the premises–conclusion format to practice the organization and composition of a strong argument. Then, you will evaluate some areas of critical thinking that you may want to build actively during this term.

Part I:
In the premise–conclusion format you learned in Unit 1, you will construct the argument that persuaded you to pursue your degree. The conclusion will be something similar to “Conclusion: I will attend Purdue Global to earn my degree in X(BA in Liberal Studies).” Offer three premises that share distinct reasons, evidence, information, or narratives that played a part in your decision. In the argument format, give one sentence for each premise and one sentence for the conclusion.
After you compose the argument, in at least 200 words, share an explanation to add context for the argument. Discuss how you devised the information to form the premises, explain why these reasons were the most important to you, and offer insights about how these elements were a factor in your decision-making process. How did these premises in particular lead to this conclusion?
Part II:
The Reading for this unit included the article on the “16 Characteristics of a Critical Thinker.” Assess yourself in this Assignment. In at least 250 words, select two characteristics from the article that you believe will be strengths and two that you believe will require mindfulness to build. Why do you believe each characteristic is relevant to you, and how can you tell if it is a strength or a weakness in your life and career? In short, Baroque art is dramatic, theatrical, ornate, sophisticated, and emotional. Looming over the development of the literary machine in the last century stand the smiling members
of the Oulipo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentille, Workshop for Potential Literature). The ouvroir of the
group’s name is not a workshop of the Bread Loaf or Bennington sort, but a knitting room, a place
where procedural effort produces a tangible textile, or in this case textual, outcome. This knitting circle
is not primarily about producing texts, however—it is potential literature, not literature, that its
members fashion. As François Le Lionnais wrote in the group’s first manifesto, an ordinary literary
work is the result of rigorous constraints in areas such as vocabulary and syntax, novelistic or dramatic
convention, poetic meter and form, and so forth. The idea of potential literature is to both analyze and
synthesize constraints—drawn from current mathematics as well as from older writing techniques
that never entered the literary mainstream. One such technique is the lipogram.

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Pablo Picasso has been called one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art by The Museum of Modern Art in a 2004 publication1 and the most influential work of art of the last 100 years in a 2007 article in Newsweek.2 Picasso created the work in 1907, the modern era. Determining the proper culture is difficult. He is considered a Spanish painter. There are clear Iberian and African influences presented in the painting. He painted it in Paris. The title references a brothel in Barcelona, Spain. So, for the most consistent classification, Spanish culture seems to be the most fitting.
That said, this work is less about the cultural ties to that place, and more about someone reaching for a new direction in art. The social/psychological reference within the work has been interpreted by William Rubin in his book dedicated to the work as reflecting his deep-seated fear and loathing of the female body, which existed side by side with his craving for and ecstatic idealization of it.3 If this is true, then the way the figures are distorted would certainly support that idea. However, for two reasons this work is more than just a social comment from Picasso or a psychological manifestation of his attitude toward women and more one of development of a personal, and possibly intentional new style of presenting subject matter. The early rivalry between Matisse and Picasso is well documented. It has been suggested that Matisse's Bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) became a challenge for Picasso's creation of Les Damoiselles d'Avignon.4 The two seemed to be competing for who would be the leader in the pursuit of Modern Art. If this work were the last one by Picasso, it may not have had the lasting impact on the world of art that it enjoys. But in his subsequent work, and others, the fragmentation and representation of subject matter in planes that defy nature began with this work. It is a new aesthetic approach that forced the viewer at that time to reconsider many aspects of what art is and how space can be redefined.
On one hand the subject matter could be viewed as a personal comment on brothels in general, but because it is clear that Picasso was in search for a new direction in modern art, it is clear that his main purpose was to influence the world of art with this new way of presenting subject matter.

Cupid, the god of love, stands on the bow of the ship, guiding it under the protection of Fortune, represented by a statuette atop the canopy of the throne. Inscribed on the canopy is the Latin phrase: “Poems are praised, but costly gifts are sought; so he [the lover] be wealthy, even a barbarian pleases. Now truly is the age of gold: by gold comes many an honor, by gold is affection gained” (Ovid’s Ars Amatoria, 2.277-78). The sleeping maiden dreams of love, whereas her older companion understands the realities of marriage in the Renaissance Italy: she holds a covered chalice symbolizing constancy and faithfulness, and leans upon the arm of the throne decorated with a relief sculpture of a putto bridling a hybrid monster representing the restraint of lust. members fashion. As François Le Lionnais wrote in the group’s first manifesto, an ordinary literary
work is the result of rigorous constraints in areas such as vocabulary and syntax, novelistic or dramatic
convention, poetic meter and form, and so forth. The idea of potential literature is to both analyze and
synthesize constraints—drawn from current mathematics as well as from older writing techniques
that never entered the literary mainstream. One such technique is the lipogram.

It is worse to be living but lacking life than it is to be dead. Therefore, one who exist in vain is one who does not exist at all. Mankind often becomes inclined to follow a particular established order, regardless of how right or wrong it is. The progression of the established is strictly dependent on the vision of the establisher. The authors of Pride & Prejudice and Watership Down pinpointed a particular direction that was to be followed…or to be created. In both novels, an inordinate decision was presented to the main characters and influenced by outside forces. Austen and Adams highlighted the pro et contra of society by instituting a societal standard, presenting a decision, and unveiling the product of consequence.
Fore mostly, Austen and Adams incorporate the influence of the setting. The reader is shown a prosaic establishment by the authors. After examining the exposition of each book, the audience will notice how the established order will act as a catalyst to the events to come. For example, when Fiver states, “There isn’t any danger here, at this moment. But it’s coming-it’s coming. Oh Hazel, look! The field! It’s covered in blood!” (Adams 7). Specifically, in Watership Down, the phenomena to come were clearly foreshadowed in the beginning. Fiver was purposefully given a supernatural ability to anticipate the future. Adams used fivers character to present a particular retrospective to his audience-the blindness of hoi polloi. The events within the setting of the novel makes it clear that society is being criticized, and not praised. The initial conversation between Hazel and Fiver is a prime example of Adam’s distaste in society’s thoughtlessness. Hazel emphasized, “The whole warren? Don’t be silly. They won’t come. They’ll say you’re out of your wits” (Adams 7). Regarding this, Fiver immediately replied, “Then they’ll be here when the bad thing comes. You must listen to me, Hazel. Believe me, something very bad is close upon us and we ought to go away” (Adams 7). The setting is representative of how lethal it is to ignore the signs of the present, because the future is not so forgiving. Considering this, the purpose behind the setting’s constant fluctuation is justified. Jane Austen took a far different foreboding approach to the process, in which, the imperilment would strike. The setting of Pride & Prejudice is more imbibed within the actual character itself. Austen specifically uses setting as a means to uncloak what type of society the characters live in. Born in Syracuse, NY to parents, Robert and Shelly and raised with his brother, Luke and sister, Colleen, he graduated high school and college before working as a teacher for over 40 years at Marcellus High School. He married, Ellen and had 3 wonderful sons, Luke Jr., Garry and Neil, whom he loved dearly.
