The global economic and environmental crisis seems to be leading to the end of a ‘linear economy’ based on consumption and waste, while setting the ground for redistributed micro-productions, inspired by new ethics of sustainability and cutting-edge economic models.
With this in mind, this paper is focused on exploring textile artisans’ communities, bottom-up and human-centred aggregations embodying the craft atmosphere of a territory due to physical proximity and shared material cultural background. Such communities are engaged in giving form and meaning to local natural fibres and managing the process of making culturally and socially significant apparel. Literature on textile artisanship has shown the potential for the application of service design
to empower collaborative communities and co-design relational services triggering holistic sustainability. Through participatory action research, this project intends to fill a gap within the strategic agenda, which could create sustainable interconnections within the patchy artisan landscape. Therefore, this paper explores possible ways in which service design could strategically contribute to encourage textile artisans’ communities towards a sustainable future.Art & design in context The situationist international
The Situationist International was a Marxist group formed in 1957 that criticized post-WWII consumer society and media spectacles. Led by Guy Debord, they advocated "situations" where people actively participate in life instead of passively consuming media representations. Key concepts included détournement (repurposing media to critique society), dérive (drifting through cities without following maps), and psychogeography (studying how environments influence emotions and behavior). Members used these tactics and created alternative maps to subvert urban spaces and mainstream culture. For a class project, students were tasked with using these Situationist concepts and techniques to create maps that reimagined their own neighborhoods.
Design Designen – Digital Craft
The love of making things need not be confined to the physical world - electronic form giving is an equal hands-on experience. My talk is investigation of the possibility of craft in the digital realm. There is a growing correspondence between digital work and traditional craft. Anyone who gives form with software, whether in web design, architecture, motion graphics or modeling, is practicing personal knowledge and producing visual artifacts that, although not material, are nevertheless products of the hands, eyes and mind.
The talk stars with an introduction to my current role at The Group, thoughts on the Bauhaus movement (and their understanding of craft & technology) and concludes with interviews by various digital crafts people.
Design Designen was created for the 6. Typotage in Munich which took place on 21. July 2009.
Note that the talk contains slides in German and English.
The annoyingly persistent importance of craft in the digital age
A crotchety presentation about the need to resist easy generalism and the belief that we can learn anything in 21 days. A reaffirmation of the fun, power, importance and necessity of going deep into you craft if you want to great work.

Guy Debord was a French Marxist theorist and filmmaker who founded the Situationist International in 1957. He is best known for his influential 1967 book The Society of the Spectacle, which critiqued consumer capitalism and the role of images and media in alienating individuals. Debord argued that advanced capitalism had replaced meaningful social interaction with an "immersive spectacle" that isolated people. His ideas inspired the 1968 general strike in France and continue to influence academics, activists, and filmmakers today through concepts like "culture jamming" and critiques of late-stage capitalism.

2014 Tongji project upcycling
This document describes an upcycling project in China that involved workshops to promote low-carbon design using industrial leftovers. Students and professors from Tongji University in China and 6 UK universities collaborated on the project. They worked in small groups with materials provided to explore design solutions, which were then tested by a community in Shanghai looking to become more sustainable. The goal was to find new uses for leftovers to reduce waste and promote low-carbon industries.

This document provides an overview of a doctoral dissertation defense. The dissertation examined the environmental sustainability of distributed production, including personal fabrication in makerspaces and Fab Labs. Through four published papers, the dissertation reviewed literature on the topic, studied how makers envision sustainability, analyzed a case study of a Fab Lab, and explored how sustainability is constituted in maker ideologies and practices. The research found gaps in how makers address sustainability issues and technological developments. It also showed tensions between counter ideals of open access and pressures for conventional funding models. The defense discusses lessons learned about enacting ideals through material practices and configurations.
