Dietary supplements are defined as products intended to supplement the diet, containing one or more dietary ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, or herbs, and are regulated under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994. They are distinct from drugs in that they do not require pre-market testing and cannot claim to diagnose or treat diseases but may carry structure-function claims with appropriate disclaimers. The act also established guidelines for labeling and safety evaluation to ensure consumer protection.
