The Die Brucke group of German Expressionist artists was interested in color like the Fauves but focused more on darker human emotions. They were influenced by earlier German Renaissance and Gothic art as well as the work of Edvard Munch and Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy. Early works also drew from Primitivism and Oceanic and African masks.
