Children and youth with untreated mental health problems tend to have lower educational achievement, greater involvement in the criminal justice system, and less stability in placements within the child welfare system than children with other disabilities. Preschool children with untreated social-emotional needs are expelled at three times the rate of older children. Once in elementary school, children with mental health problems are more likely to be unhappy, absent, suspended or expelled, with African American students facing even greater risks of suspension or expulsion compared to other groups.
Almost 1 in 5 children in the US have a mental health or substance abuse disorder, yet only 20-25% receive treatment. With more children seeking mental health treatment due to parity laws, shortages in professionals will require greater coordination between pediatricians and psychiatrists. The primary care setting provides opportunities for early identification, counseling, guidance, and management of mental health issues which can reduce hospitalizations and offset increased outpatient costs.
Most children and youth with mental health problems do not receive needed services, with 75-80% not receiving services. There is significant variation between states, with as much as a 30% difference in unmet need. Latino children are less likely to receive services than other ethnic groups, with 88% of Latino children having unmet needs. Even insured children and those with intense needs often do not receive services.
This document presents asthma prevalence data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey for multiple U.S. states and territories from 2006-2010. Overall, the median current active asthma percentage was 26.6% among 36 states totaling over 9,000 individuals sampled.
This document presents data on the estimated percentage of children using inhaled short acting beta agonists for asthma by state from 2006-2010, according to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey. It provides the sample size, percentage using short acting beta agonists, standard error and 95% confidence interval for each state and territory, as well as median, range and total for 36 states. The data finds variation across states in percentage of children with asthma using short acting beta agonists, from a low of 28.5% to a high of 57%.
