At the national levels, seaweedaquaculture licensing procedures
need to be simplified for greater cy and efficiency while the social acceptability of seaweed concessions should be promoted. Moreover, it is important for all stakeholders and the whole industry (from policy makers, local authorities, researchers to the production sectors) to have trained
personnel, thus requiring the development of training programmes in regional and/or national centres.
The document summarizes a research program funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and managed by the Water Research Commission to build capacity for faecal sludge management in sub-Saharan Africa. Twelve research teams across six countries were awarded contracts to characterize pit latrine contents and develop emptying and treatment technologies. This document summarizes PAC-EU cooperation on food and nutrition security research and innovation niches. It notes that 62 joint research projects have been funded, addressing various pillars of food security. Australia and New Zealand participate in most projects. Barriers to cooperation include a lack of awareness of food security policies and insufficient financing. Innovation niches with potential include aquaculture, climate-resilient crops, and food safety. Traditional knowledge also provides opportunities. Strengthening the enabling environment, financing, and multi-disciplinary research were recommended to better address food and nutrition challenges through science, technology and innovation cooperation between the Pacific and EU.
The document outlines a proposed project called "Feeding Knowledge" which aims to create an international network to promote research and innovation on food security. The project would establish an international scientific network, train young experts, develop policies to meet Third World country needs, and create an international technology platform as a hub for collaboration. The platform would collect and organize data, build knowledge, develop networks to understand and solve issues, and integrate people, tools and information through various functions and tools. The project's governance structure and costs are also summarized.

Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (ARC)
The Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center
has a long-standing reputation in development cooperation.
Over the past 30 years we have led and participated in
numerous projects in over 20 countries. Our projects focus
on brine shrimp and its applications in aquaculture and in
integrated salt production units, and on improved larval
culture of tropical fish, shrimp and shellfish species of local
interest.
We run/ran projects funded by UNDP-FAO, UNIDO, UN-
Mekong, SEAFDEC, Belgian government (ABOS,
BELSPO), Flemish government (VLIR, VVOB, Ministry of
Education), EU (STD, INCO, local national projects), local
governments, in Latin America (Peru, Ecuador and Chile),
Africa (Tunisia, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa) and Asia
(Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and
Iran).
Our cooperation remains foremost demand-driven but the
paradigm gradually shifted from pure knowledge transfer to
collaborative efforts in a spirit of equal partnership.
is the controlled production of aquatic
organisms such as fish, crustaceans, shellfish
and algae. For the past decades it has been
and is the fastest growing bio-industry. Due to
overfishing, meeting the growing demand for
healthy, safe and tasty seafood will largely
depend from aquaculture. Already now, about
half of the roughly150 million ton of consumed
aquatic organisms was produced through
aquaculture. Predictions are that by 2030
more than 75 % of our seafood will be
produced through aquaculture.
