Green Infrastructure
Reg. Charity no. 280422
Green infrastructure describes all of the
green space (parks, open spaces, playing
fields, woodlands, street trees, allotments,
and private gardens), blue space (streams,
canals, wetlands) and green features (green
roofs and walls) within your development…

Bristol 2015 Ambitions
• Energy theme: Our ambition is for Bristol to become the UK’s first city for sustainable energy,
leading the way towards smart energy efficiency, affordable warmth and 100% renewables,
with a thriving low carbon sector delivering solutions for the city and across the world
• Food theme: Our ambition is for Bristol to be the sustainable food capital of the UK by 2020
• Nature theme: Our ambition is to make Bristol a world-leading, nature rich (biophilic) city
where people are connected to a landscape rich in wildlife
• Resource theme: Our ambition is to make Bristol a leading circular economy city, where
people are focussed on reducing their residual waste (through waste prevention, re-use and
recycling) and businesses are engaged in adopting circular economy business models
• Transport theme: Our ambition is to make Bristol a world leading city in active travel, where
4 out of 5 journeys under five miles are made by foot, bike and public transport

How do we work with our city to build support
for and start to create:
• High quality green infrastructure and habitat
networks that are good for people & wildlife?
• Sustainable transport networks that provide
attractive alternatives to car travel?

Green Infrastructure Benchmark
We are… working closely with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
to develop a green infrastructure benchmark
The benchmark will… help developers and planners define
“what good looks like” and how it can be achieved
Wild Service will… work with developers to deliver high
quality green infrastructure at each stage of the
development process
Challenges & Opportunities
Reg. Charity no. 280422
Why green infrastructure? Why Wild Service?
“Green infrastructure is often a complex and time-consuming element of large projects and
getting it right can mean the difference between a smooth passage through the planning
system and costly delays.
Whether your development scheme is large or small, your approach to green infrastructure
may help secure planning approval. We work with you to demonstrate how you have
considered local priorities for wildlife, water management and wellbeing of residents.
We have the skills and understanding to help you make sense of the different aspects of green
infrastructure – relating to wildlife, people, and the wider landscape – and support you to
deliver a project which is both environmentally-sensitive and cost-sensitive.”
Challenges & Opportunities
Reg. Charity no. 280422
Wildlife
Does the development
contribute to net biodiversity
gain through the creation of
new habitat and
enhancement of existing
habitat?
Does the development
promote consideration of
biodiversity in all aspects and
phases of construction?
Water
Does the design for SuDS, and
all its components, follow
current good practice in terms
of design, implementation
and long-term management?
Are features relating to
relating to water management
used to enhance local
distinctiveness and add value
to the overall design?
Wellbeing
Does the development
consider how street furniture
and other features can
optimise use of green
infrastructure at all times of
year?
Does the development
demonstrate innovative
solutions to overcoming social
and cultural barrier to access
and use of green space?
Challenges & Opportunities

2. LANDSCAPE DESIGN
3. IMPLEMENTATION
4. LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT

  • 47. Reg. Charity no. 280422 Why green infrastructure? Why Wild Service? “Green infrastructure is often a complex and time-consuming element of large projects and getting it right can mean the difference between a smooth passage through the planning system and costly delays. Whether your development scheme is large or small, your approach to green infrastructure may help secure planning approval. We work with you to demonstrate how you have considered local priorities for wildlife, water management and wellbeing of residents. We have the skills and understanding to help you make sense of the different aspects of green infrastructure – relating to wildlife, people, and the wider landscape – and support you to deliver a project which is both environmentally-sensitive and cost-sensitive.” Challenges & Opportunities
