Module Overview
This Course seeks to give everyday workers, travelers, and adventurers the
building blocks to help anticipate, avoid and respond to danger.
Developing a Security Mindset
While the world is filled constantly evolving threats, one does not have to live
in fear and passively rely on others when challenging security situations take
place. There are simple steps ordinary people can take to avoid, mitigate,
and at times eliminate the security dangers that arise in everyday life.
The Challenge
The world is a dangerous challenging place. 2020 has put a spotlight on personal security. Now more than ever
organizations as well as everyday people are realizing the importance of risk mitigation, personal security, safety and
cyber security awareness.
Security Mindset
Before one can react to a situation, one must first have the proper mindset. This
mindset has three elements: recognition of the threat, accepting responsibility for
one's own security and the will to take timely & practical ACTION!
We live in a world filled with Security Challenges...
1. Recognition of the threat
★ Personal and collective security are built
upon the realization that threats exist.
★ Ask yourself: Should I take my personal Security seriously?
Global Peace Index Quick Findings:
• The level of global peacefulness
continues to deteriorate.
• Iceland remain the most peaceful
country in the world.
• Afghanistan is the least peaceful.
Security Mindset does NOT
mean paranoia!

2. Accepting Responsibility
★ Now that we can agree that we should take
Personal Security seriously, it is time we
take Personal Responsibility.
Denial vs. Security Mindset
Mindset of Denial
• Believe they are not an “important” target.
• Ignore the signs of an impending crime
directed against them.
• Believe bad things only happen to bad
people.
Security Mindset
✓ Recognize that there are threats.
✓ Accept that they are responsible for their
own security.
✓ Practice Situational Awareness at all
times.
Notice the Difference??
3. Take ACTION!
Main Points
• Security Empowerment!
• Crime Triangle
• Trust your gut!
Security Empowerment!
• By taking security awareness
courses such as this one you are
already 80% ahead of most people.
• The other 20% dependson your level
of commitment and will to use the
tactics.
Crime Triangle
Crime Triangle
The Crime Triangle identifies 3 factors that create a
criminal offense.
★ Desire of the a criminal. NO CONTROL!
★ Target of the criminal’s desire. NO CONTROL!
★ Opportunity for the crime to be committed.
Trust your Instincts
★ Most crime victims report “feeling
something was wrong” before the crime took
place.
★ Crime victims often say statements such as:
○ “I knew something was wrong…”
○ “Something told me not to go…”
Security Mindset
“Now you you have the foundation to build a strong security mindset. I
encourage you to use this knowledge in your everyday life, continual to
invest in your personal security education, and help others whenever
possible.”- David Santiago
