The focus should be on the creation of innovative IT ecosystems that would develop services and applications making use of information generated by energy consumers (e.g. through social networks) or captured from sensors (e.g. smart meters, smart plugs, social media) and micro-generation.
An overview of the DEMETER H2020 project which aims to lead the digital transformation of Europe’s agri-food sector through the rapid adoption of advanced IoT technologies, data science and smart farming, ensuring its long-term viability and sustainability.
DEMETER is a large-scale deployment of farmer centric, interoperable smart farming-IoT based platforms delivered through a series of 20 pilots across 18 countries (14 States in the EU).
This presentation gives an overview of the DEMETER objectives and the pilot projects involved. Involving 60 partners, DEMETER adopts a multi-actor approach across the value chain (demand and supply), with 25 deployment sites, 6,000 farmers and over 38,000 devices and sensors being deployed and participants involved come from different production sectors (dairy, meat, vegetables, fruit and arable crops), production systems (conventional and organic) and different farm sizes and types, optimising the data analysis obtained across multiple farms.

The Twilight Zone as a metaphor refers to the situation where innovations have proven to be promising but have to be up-scaled to a higher level of adoption. Therefore we have to bridge the difference between technology readiness and user readiness. “We don’t need more apps. We need a system”. This short quote of a farmer reflects the high degree of fragmentation and discontinuity in innovation processes we observe.
More focus on the user readiness of technologies and support by multi-actor ecosystems is required, in which innovations are embedded in a system approach and tested in living labs. These are important pathways towards a sustainable digital innovation ecosystem and to navigate through the Twilight Zone.
During the 2021 Mansholt Lecture, l presented the options and challenges for stakeholders in the transition towards a sustainable digital innovation ecosystem. Europe needs to consider creating an integral European policy on this issue.

4. Why are simulations beneficial?
• Sometimes the solution requires a lengthy process of configuration and
deployment.
• Large amount of time needed to acquire a sufficient data for analysis.
• High economic investment and time restrictions related to the deployment of
technologies in real or scaled environments.
• Simulation environment also provides the benefit of consistent, constant, and
immediate feedback.
• Helps the decision making process.
5. What are multi-agent systems?
• Multi-agent systems are I.T. systems composed of multiple interacting
intelligent agents within an environment.
• Intelligence may include some methodic, functional, procedural approach,
algorithmic search or reinforcement learning.
• Active agents (proactive) and passive agents (they only react to stimuli initiated
by other agents).
• Agents can communicate with one another and may decide to operate
individually or work together towards a common goal.

Move forward the current waste management practices into a circular economy motto demonstrating the value of integrating and
validating 20 eco-innovative solutions that cover all the waste value chain. The benefits of these solutions will be enhanced by a holistic
