Bookmobile or Mobile library
Definitions:
“A large vehicle that contains many library books and
that goes to different places so that people can borrow the
books.”
A mobile library is a traveling library service that uses
a specially equipped vehicle to bring books and educational
resources to communities without access to a fixed library.
A bookmobile, or mobile library, is a library on wheels,
designed to reach diverse populations by transporting a
collection of books and materials to locations beyond
traditional library settings.
3
What is Mobile Library?
A mobile library, also known as a bookmobile or library on wheels, is a
unique and flexible library service that operates from a vehicle, such as a bus or
van, rather than a fixed brick and mortar building. The primary purpose of a
mobile library is to bring library resources and services directly to communities
that may have limited access to traditional libraries. This includes remote rural
areas, underserved urban neighborhoods, schools, and other locations where
residents may face barriers to visiting a stationary library.
4
Meaning of Mobile Library
 A mobile library, also known as a bookmobile or library on wheels is a service
that operates from a specially designed vehicle (like a bus or van) instead of a
fixed building.
 It aims to bring library resources, including books, periodicals, and sometimes
digital materials, directly to communities that may face barriers in accessing
traditional libraries.
5
Purpose of Mobile Library
1. The primary purpose is to reach communities with limited access to traditional
libraries. This includes remote rural areas, underserved urban neighborhoods, and
schools.
2. Mobile libraries bridge the gap in regions where establishing a permanent
library may be impractical due to geographical challenges.
3. Mobile libraries actively engage with communities, understanding their unique
needs and tailoring services accordingly.
3. They often conduct programs, events, and educational activities to foster
community involvement and a love for reading.
6
Cont…
5. The mobile nature allows flexibility in scheduling and adapting to changing
community needs.
6. The service can respond to specific events, educational priorities, or requests
from the communities it serves.
7. Mobile libraries often focus on children, schools, and areas with lower literacy
rates to make a positive impact on learning.
8. In addition to lending books, mobile libraries may offer various library
services, including story time sessions, educational programs, and access to
information technology.
7
Key features of a mobile library include:
1. Vehicle Design: Mobile libraries are typically housed in specially designed
vehicles equipped with shelves, storage, and seating to accommodate a collection
of books, periodicals, and sometimes multimedia resources. The vehicle is often
customized to provide a functional and inviting space for patrons.
2. Rotating Schedule: Mobile libraries operate on a rotating schedule, visiting
specific locations on designated days and times. This allows them to serve a
variety of communities, ensuring a broader reach and maximizing impact.
3. Community Outreach: Mobile libraries engage in active community
outreach, working to understand the unique needs and interests of the populations
they serve. This outreach can include partnerships with schools, community
centers, and local organizations.
8
Cont…
4. Diverse Collections: Despite the limited space, mobile libraries offer a diverse
collection of books, magazines, DVDs, and sometimes digital resources. The goal
is to provide a range of materials that cater to the interests and educational needs
of the community.
5. Library Services: In addition to lending materials, mobile libraries often offer
traditional library services such as story time sessions, educational programs, and
access to information technology. Some modern mobile libraries also incorporate
digital technology, providing internet access and
e-books.
6. Flexibility: One of the key advantages of mobile libraries is their ability to
adapt to changing community needs. They can respond to specific events,
community requests, or evolving educational priorities.
9
Components of Bookmobile or Mobile library
The components of a bookmobile include:
1. Vehicle:
The most essential component is the vehicle itself. It could be a specially
designed van, bus, or trailer that is equipped to carry a significant number of
books and other library materials.
2. Shelving and Storage:
Interior shelving is designed to store and display books. The shelves are
often adjustable to accommodate different sizes of books and materials. Efficient
storage is crucial to maximize the number of items that can be carried.
10

3. Books and Materials:
The collection of books and other materials is a central component. The selection
of materials depends on the target audience and the purpose of the bookmobile. It
may include a diverse range of books, audiobooks, DVDs, and other educational
resources.
4. Library Management System:
A mobile library often has a library management system in place to keep track of
the inventory, loans, returns, and other administrative tasks. This system may be
integrated with the main library system if the bookmobile is part of a larger
library network.
11
Cont…
5. Computers and Technology:
Some modern bookmobiles are equipped with computers or tablets to facilitate
online catalog searches, checkouts, and returns. They may also have internet
connectivity to support digital services and access to online resources.
6. Seating and Reading Area:
A comfortable seating area is included to provide patrons with a place to sit and
read. This area may also serve as a space for library programs, events, and
educational activities.
12
Cont…
7. Accessibility Features:
To ensure that the bookmobile is accessible to everyone, it may be equipped with
features such as ramps, lifts, or other accessibility aids for individuals with
mobility challenges.
8. Signage and Branding:
Clear and attractive signage is important for promoting the bookmobile and its
services. The exterior may feature colorful graphics, logos, and information to
attract attention and inform the community about the schedule and offerings.
13
Cont…
9. Staff:
Trained library staff or volunteers are essential for operating the bookmobile.
They assist patrons, manage checkouts, provide information, and may also
conduct library programs.
10. Communication Tools:
Communication tools, such as a public address system or intercom, are useful for
making announcements, conducting programs, and interacting with patrons.
