Destiny
AHaller
Our Destiny is shrouded in a mystery.
Discern what is of fate.
Fate
• Inevitable
• Unavoidable
• The Present
• Caused by the results of my Decisions up to this moment
• Past is irreversible. Only the future can be controlled
Discern what is of fortune
Fortune
• Chance
• Luck
• Unplanned
• No one cause the outcome (it
seems)
• Accident – Happenstance? (it
seems)
Discern what consists of a Destiny.
Destiny
• Concerns the future
• Can be Foreknown
• Predestined to some
• Fatalistic to others
• To many post life
• Requires a Destination to
have any meaning
When this Life Ceases- What is Our Destination?
Three Points of View
Finite with no afterlife
Atheism
Annihilation
Naturalism - Hedonism
Circular – Life Endless Circular
Hinduism
Buddhism
Eternal with a Resurrection
Christianity
Judaism
Islam
Begins Ends
Final
If Destiny speaks of
Temporary with no afterlife
• There is no meaningful destination. There is none.
• A Nontranscendent life.
• Float from experience to experience.
• No long-term purpose
• Survive as best as possible. Eat drink, certainly be merry.
If Destiny speaks of
Circular – Life Nonstop Circular – never ending states of
existence – destinations unlimited
If Destiny speaks of the eternal
Eternal with a resurrection
Almost no one born claims with authority to speak on this
post life destiny or destination except …
• “If you believe in God, believe also in Me. I go to prepare a
place (destination) for you so that where (destination) I am
you may be also” Jn 14:1 Jesus Christ
• To the thief on the cross “Truly today you shall be with Me
in Paradise (a destination or place) ”
Destiny
Assumes a Destination
The words that I remember
From my childhood still are true
That there's none so blind
As those who will not see
And to those who lack the courage
And say it's dangerous to try
Well they just don't know
That love eternal will not be denied
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere you can hear my voice
I know I'll find you somehow
Somehow, somehow
I know I'll find you somehow
And somehow I'll return again to you
Yes I know it's going to happen
I can feel you getting near
And soon we'll be returning
To the fountain of our youth
And if you wake up wondering
In the darkness I'll be there
My arms will close around you
And protect you with the truth
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere you can hear my voice
I know I'll find you somehow
Somehow, somehow
I know I'll find you somehow
And somehow I'll return again to you
A Song Built on Concept of Preternaturalism – somewhere between the
mundane natural and the spectacular miraculous is this twilight zone
Many years ago, I was deeply in love with a college classmate. Sadly, the relationship did not last...she left
me. I moved on with my life. Almost 50 years past...I rarely gave her a thought. When she did cross my
mind, it was always positive...I have many wonderful memories of her.
About a year ago, I learned she had died of cancer. For reasons I can't explain, I was overwhelmed with
grief. After much thought, I traveled to where she had lived. I had this idea...perhaps I could find her
husband and talk. I wanted to learn about her life...I hoped (and prayed) he would understand. I also
accepted the possibility he might throw me out... As I drove by his house...someone was home at the front
door. I pulled into the driveway. The former husband was out on the front porch.
I introduced myself... I explained that I had been a classmate of his late wife's. I had only recently learned
of her passing and wanted to offer my condolences. He was very gracious and asked if I'd like to have a seat
on the porch... We made small talk for a short while.
A Story From a YouTube Posting
He had since remarried. I told him she had ended our relationship. He smiled broadly and said
that he knew of me, but never asked her my name. My concerns were no longer an issue...we
talked openly for a while.
He asked if I'd like to watch a memorial video that was made in honor of her. I followed him inside
and sat down in front of his desktop. I saw various photos that followed her life from childhood to
just weeks before her death. I was moved to tears...it was touching. As the video came to an end, "I
Know You're Out There Somewhere" played in the background.
I asked him where I might find her grave...he gave me directions, and I left. A few minutes later, I
was standing by her gravestone...I'd like to think she heard the things I said. Almost a year has
passed...the pain of her passing is still haunting me. But I know I did the right thing and I'm
forever grateful to her husband for being so cooperative...
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere
I know you're out there somewhere
Somewhere you can hear my voice
I know I'll find you somehow
Somehow, somehow
I know I'll find you somehow
And somehow I'll return again to you
The End
