A desktop environment consists of icons, windows, toolbars, folders, wallpapers and widgets that aim to provide an intuitive interface for users to access and edit files on personal computers. Desktop GUIs help users interact with concepts similar to the physical world but do not provide access to all operating system features. Desktop environments were mostly used on personal computers until the rise of mobile computing.
