What can Singapore teach us about User Experience and Product Design?
No matter how beautifully-designed a city is, the approval will come from the people who use it - its citizens.
And from this point of view, Singapore is impressively functional. A core value at the heart of its design next to harmony and consideration.

3. In order to warn pedestrians with
vision impairment to be cautious,
tactile tiles are placed pretty much
in every location close to crossings.

ACCESSIBILITY
Braille blocks
Wheelchair space
4. Wheeling ramp
They are placed along the stairs of the
pedestrian bridges to help cyclists cross them
without having to carry their bikes.

CONVENIENCE
Constructed far enough
from the handrail to
avoid the catching of
pedals or handle bars.
5. Green-roofed
bus stops
As part of a plan to cool the city, these green
roofs aim to reduce ambient heat by around 2°c
to provide a more comfortable experience for
commuters.

SUSTAINABILITY
The Nabhali herb was chosen
for its hardiness and ability
to grow and spread well.
6. Gate marker
Property exits that face sidewalks are often
hazardous for pedestrians who have no visibility
of what’s coming. The bright marking on the floor
helps to alert riders to slow down.

7. Cell phone tree

their surroundings, the cell phone trees are
usually shaped like pine or palm trees.

8. Covered linkway
Given the weather in Singapore,
there is a covered linkway from
each subway station (MRT) to
points of interest within a 400m
radius.

CONVENIENCE
Covered all the way
from the subway to a
taxi stand, bus stop,
school, mall, hospital
and housing.
9. Garden city
The city-state is an extraordinary lesson for the
rest of the world on how to seamlessly blend
urban living with nature. Examples like the ones
below are legion here.

The covered linkway is
cut according to the
tree and not the other
way around.
SUSTAINABILITY
Why would you cut a tree
when you can make a hole
in the car park roof
instead?
