This document provides design recommendations for castings. It recommends making patterns slightly oversized to compensate for metal shrinkage during solidification. For sand castings, it is more economical to have flat parting lines rather than contoured ones. Draft angles should also be included to allow easy removal of the pattern and casting from the mold. Heavier sections should be located closer to risers to allow thinner areas to solidify first. Sharp corners and abrupt changes in thickness should be avoided due to stresses and uneven cooling issues. Interior walls should be thinner than exterior ones to reduce thermal and residual stresses. Reinforcement is needed around holes placed in stressed areas. Balance is needed between rim, spokes and hub sizes to minimize stresses in wheel cast
