People with diabetes have a higher chance of having periodontal (gum) disease, an infection of the gum and bone that hold the teeth in place. Periodontal disease can lead to pain, bad breath that doesn’t go away, chewing difficulties, and even tooth loss. Diabetes can also slow down healing, so it can interfere with treatment of periodontal disease.

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is an important source of energy for the cells that make up the muscles and tissues. It's also the brain's main source of fuel. The main cause of diabetes varies by type.
18. Moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in a right eye. Larger haemorrhages and whitish lesions with fluffy borders representing cotton-wool spots have developed. Minimal nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in a right eye.
