Dennis Cunanan was born into a simple family in Pampanga and instilled with principles of service from a young age. He worked hard and achieved academic and professional success, holding many government positions over the years including directorships. In 2012 he was elected Secretary General of Junior Chamber International, a global non-profit, and helped coordinate relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. He will officially assume the Secretary General role in January 2014.

This is the creed that one boy lived by as he worked his way up the ladder of success, positive
growth, and change for the country. Dennis Cunanan is born into a simple family in Angeles,
Pampanga. He has certainly had his share of tough and trying times, but the principles his
parents, Diosdado Cunanan and Amelia Lacson, had instilled in him as a child allowed him to
reach greater heights not only for himself, but also for his country. This coming year will find
him reaching greater heights as he has been appointed as Junior Chamber International’s
newest appointed Secretary General.
During the World Congress in Taiwan last 2012, Dennis Lacson Cunanan was elected and
appointed as Junior Chamber International’s Secretary General. The turnover occurred during
the succeeding year and has finalized in this year’s JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Looking back, Dennis ‘Decu’ Cunanan has always the academic achiever—he graduated in
elementary and in high school with honors. Moreover, he successfully made his way to
University of the Philippines – Diliman, where he took up Public Administration and became a
Student Regent in the Board of Regents, which is the university’s highest policy-making body.
He also actively took part in UP’s Student Council as Councilor.
Afterwards, he has also served in several public and government offices. In August 2000, Dennis
was appointed National Youth Commission’s Executive Director, directly under the Office of the
President of the Philippines. Following that, in the month of July, the following year, he got
appointed as well as Head Executive Assistant to the Office of the Speaker of the House of
Representatives. It was January 2004 then, when he was also appointed as Presidential
Assistant for Youth Affairs.
He also served as the OIC Vice Mayor of Magalang for a time. His service for the government
continued when he was appointed as the Director of the Philippine Councilors’ League and
Philippine Vice Mayors’ League, as well as the Secretary General of the National Movement of
Young Legislators in Region III.

2. In 2005, Dennic Cunanan became the National President of JCI Philippines. In 2008, he was
elected as International Vice President assigned to Asia and the Pacific in a World Congress held
in Turkey. He had also served as Chief Executive Assistant to the World President of Junior
Chamber International in 2009, and further on as the World General Legal Counsel (GLC) in
2010. He was elected as the JCI World Executive Vice President for 2011 during the World
Congress in Osaka, Japan.
Aside from the above, he also headed the Technology Resource Center as Deputy Director
General in December 2004. He became chair of Change Management Team for the agency’s
rationalization program. As a direct result of his leadership, TRC reduced its workforce –
definitely a first in bureaucracy rationalization. The impressive outcome of his work paved the
way for him to be assigned as Director General for TRC in December 2009. And in July 2010,
under President Benigno Aquino III’s administration, Dennis was once again appointed to
assume the same position.
Dennis L. Cunanan will assume as Junior Chamber International’s Secretary General office this
coming January 1, 2014.

There are few men who loved the country as much as Dennis Cunanan did. And when he loves, it
is not just limited to emotion or baseless declaration. Cunanan loved the country and acted on
it.
Who is Dennis Cunanan?
Dennis Cunanan was born into a simple family in Angeles, Pampanga, to parents Diosdado
Cunanan and Amelia Lacson. From an early age, his parents had instilled principles that have
allowed him to reach greater heights not only for himself, but also for his country. He has
served society in more ways one can imagine. From such a young age, he has been working
hard to help improve the country. Dennis Cunanan is not just a man of the Philippines. He is a
man of the world.
As a child, circumstances hadn’t allowed him to reach further. He was but from a simple family,
and from such a young age, he had already witnessed the great divide between social statuses.
Wanting to break free from the restraints that society has placed upon him, Dennis Cunanan
pushed his boundaries and defied the odds. In high school he dared run for student council and
won as the third year representative. It was during that time that he started his stellar career in
community service and politics. He was, at the time, given the chance to demonstrate his
brilliant leadership skills by spearheading one program after another. He was eventually elected
President of the student council, and graduated with honors.
“It was during that time that I embraced the active principles in life,” Dennis Cunanan fondly
shares. “We all have a responsibility to our society. If I didn’t do my part, it felt as if I wasn’t
part of this society.”
Dennis Cunanan then moved on to greater heights as he was admitted into the State University.
He was first enrolled into the College of Economics, but later on moved to the then-new
National College of Public Administration and Governance, majoring in Public Administration.
He was an active participant in his organizations, and was later appointed as a Student Regent
in the Board of Regents, which is the university’s highest policy-making body. As the Student

4. Regent, he was able to push the Board into releasing the scholars’ stipend before the start of
the school year, instead of at the end of it, which was the way things were before.
After acquiring his diploma in Public Administration, Dennis Cunanan went home to receive
blessings from his father. At the time he thought that the only was to resolve the conflicts in
the country was to take up arms. His father then advised him to first try out running for local

5. politics. His father brought him to the municipal hall, where a friend commented that he would
finish as the Number 10 Councilor. Maybe it was pride, but driven by the desire to really make a
change, Dennis Cunanan then ran for office, and finished as the Number 1 Councilor of
Magalang, Pampanga.
He also served as the OIC Vice Mayor of Magalang for a time. His service for the government
continued when he was appointed as the Director of the Philippine Councilors’ League and
Philippine Vice Mayors’ League, as well as the Secretary General of the National Movement of
Young Legislators in Region III.
His achievements did not end there. Years after graduating from the university, he then moved
on to further heights and had just recently finished an Executive Education Program called
“Leaders in Development: Managing Change in a Dynamic World” in the Harvard Kennedy
School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Presently, Dennis Cunanan is the appointed Secretary General of Junior Chamber International.
He will assume office in January 1, 2014.

“THE LATEST ON DENNIS CUNANAN, DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY RESOURCE CENTER”
Dennis Cunanan, Technology Resource Center’s Director General, has recently been appointed
as the newest Secretary General of Junior Chamber International. He had been elected and
appointed in the 2012 Junior Chamber International World Congress in Taiwan. Turnover
occurred the following year, and finalizing in a formal induction in this year’s World Congress in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Dennis Cunanan has been an active player in politics since his early childhood days. His strong
and moral sense has been his backbone, and his principles have been his conscience in the
years that he has been serving his local city, the organizations he has been part of, and of
course, the country. In his recent trip to Rio de Janeiro, Cunanan, as the Secretary General,
aided the National President of JCI Philippines (Ryan Ravanzo from JCI Dagupan) in seeking for
help for the victims of Haiyan, the strongest typhoon that hit the country.

Cunanan and his colleagues in JCI took arms and helped activate Operation: Hope, Junior
Chamber International’s fund raising activity.
“The gathering became the perfect opportunity to solicit support from the other delegates and
to activate JCI Operation: Hope for the victims of Yolanda,” Dennis Cunanan shares during a
recent interview. Dennis took advantage of the opportunity to access support from the many
other delegates of the World Congress. Many of the participating countries offered support and
donated relief goods straight to the headquarters here in the Philippines, which will be
distributed accordingly to the devastated areas.
“The delegates’ support was overwhelming, to say the least,” Cunanan expresses. “Until now,
they have been gathering relief support. JCI Japan committed 1M yen just recently. And that’s
just from the members. The Missouri headquarters have already gathered USD 15,000.00,

7. which they will send to the relief operations. Any amount and assistance means a lot and will
make a lot of difference.”
Operation: Hope is a global fund-raising relief project, first established in the early 1990’s to
respond to the different calamities that hit JCI’s partner countries. Aside from Operation: Hope

8. for the Philippines, this fund-raising relief program has been activated to aid Japan when the
country had been hit by a devastating earthquake.
Operation: Hope first started as “Operation: Brotherhood”, established by the members of JCI
Philippines to support those who have been affected by the war in Vietnam. The abovementioned members organized a global movement that sought the help of different
professionals, including doctors, nurses, and counselors who can help the victims of war. The
movement was praised for its success.
In the early 1990’s, when calamities struck different parts of the world, Operation: Hope was
formally ope-rationalized. Members around the world wanted to help and support their own
members. Thus, Junior Chamber International Operation: Hope was born. The funds that were
collated were brought to the intended beneficiaries.
Dennis Cunanan is also the first Filipino and Asian to have been appointed as the worldwide
organization’s Secretary General under the current system. There had already been a Filipino
Secretary General many years ago, when the World President was a Filipino but at the time, the
SG was appointed by whoever the World President was. But under the current system where
the officers are elected before being appointed, Cunanan was proud to have become the first.
The last Secretary General before him was a Brazilian, preceded by a lieu of Americans and
Europeans.
Dennis Cunanan will officially assume office on January 1, 2014.
